How many days do you need in New York?
It's the question every first-timer asks - and the honest answer is: it depends on how much you want to pack in. Here's our experts' rule of thumb.
3-4 nights: Perfect for a first New York city break. Enough time for the icons: Times Square, Central Park, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and a Broadway show.
5-7 nights: a fuller trip. You'll tick off the headline sights at a relaxed pace and still have time to wander Brooklyn, SoHo and Greenwich Village, lose an afternoon in a world-class museum, and shop Fifth Avenue.

Card is king in New York - contactless and mobile payments are accepted almost everywhere, from Broadway box offices and Fifth Avenue stores to yellow cabs and the subway. That said, it's worth carrying some cash for the small things that make the trip: tipping (usually 15-20% in restaurants, and a few dollars for bellhops, housekeeping and tour guides), hot pretzels from a street cart, or that spontaneous coffee in Central Park. Plenty of smaller delis and food trucks still love a cash sale.
