About this tour
Arrive in beautiful Johannesburg before transferring to Sanctuary Mandela for a relaxed first night, then head out to Camp Bethel, your home for the next six nights. Set on its own private reserve, the camp offers an authentic and immersive base from which to explore one of the world’s great wildlife destinations.
The centrepiece of the trip is Kruger National Park, home to 146 species of mammals, nearly 500 bird species, and the iconic Big Five. Two full-day safari drives take you deep into the park’s southern section, stopping at waterholes, lookout points, and picnic spots as you search for lions, leopards, elephants, rhino and buffalo.
An optional afternoon safari offers the chance to witness the bush after dark, when caracals, porcupines and bush babies emerge beneath a vast African sky. Beyond the safaris, the itinerary offers remarkable variety. A visit to a local wildlife rehabilitation centre brings you face to face with cheetahs, African wild dogs and vultures, highlighting the conservation challenges facing South Africa’s wildlife today.
A panoramic mountain tour takes in the Blyde River Canyon, the third-largest canyon on earth, the ThreeRondavels, God’s Window and the dramatic Lisbon Waterfalls. Back at camp, a guided nature walk introduces the plant life that sustains the ecosystem, while an evening at the Nyani cultural village brings local traditions to life through music and dance from the San, Tsonga, Zulu and other tribes. The week ends with a traditional South African braai beneath the stars.
