About this tour

Fly overnight to Johannesburg before transferring to Mabula Private Game Reserve, set in the heart of the Limpopo bushveld and home to 60 native mammals and more than 300 species of birds and reptiles, including the Big Five.

Head out for the first of many safaris in an open-air 4x4 vehicle across the reserve, searching for the incredible Big Five, as well as hyena, jackal, antelope and the elusive cheetah. A fascinating wildlife talk delivered by the resident ecologist and reserve manager sets you up with the knowledge to get the most from every drive.

Enjoy a deeper look at the conservation efforts to protect the southern hornbill during a visit to the award-winning Hornbill Project. The endangered species is a focal point of South African culture, and you’ll learn all about the rare birds. A guided bush walk provides an entirely different perspective of the reserve, tracking the paths of kudu, zebra and lion through the undergrowth at close quarters.

As the sun slips behind the horizon and the sky turns a vivid patchwork of red, orange and purple, stop at a scenic spot in the bush to enjoy a refreshing sundowner and snacks. Another evening is spent stargazing beneath a sky completely free of light pollution, as your guide points out the constellations of the southern hemisphere overhead.

Your final day brings one last safari and a bush lunch out in the reserve, a fitting finale to your adventure in South Africa. After saying your goodbyes, transfer to Johannesburg airport for your overnight flight home.
