Across the USA by Rail: New York to San Francisco

Tour Itinerary

• Day 1 • Depart London

  Depart London by air and arrive into San Francisco the same day, where you’ll stay for two nights.

• Day 2 • San Francisco, Alcatraz

  Today you have an included half day tour of San Francisco. Your day will start with a narrated coach tour taking in some of the city's famous Victorian homes, Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, the Palace of Fine Arts, Fisherman's Wharf, the Presidio, North Beach and including ferry and entrance to the infamous Alcatraz with audioguide.

• Day 3 • Coast Starlight to Los Angeles

  Today you will take the Coast Starlight train along the west coast to Los Angeles for a two-night stay, with two full days at leisure to explore the sprawling capital of California – perhaps visit Sunset Boulevard and spot your favourite icons along the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

• Day 5 • Los Angeles to Flagstaff

  Board the Southwest Chief Amtrak train in the evening, relax in your Superliner Roomette accommodation on board for your overnight journey to Flagstaff.

• Day 6-8 • Flagstaff > Grand Canyon > Chicago

  Arriving into Flagstaff very early in the morning, make your way to your hotel where your room will be held for your early arrival. You’ll have a full day at leisure to stretch your legs, ahead of your included visit to the Grand Canyon on Day 7 – one of the undisputed highlights of any trip to the United States. After another night in Flagstaff you’ll board the southwest Chief again for your onward overnight journey to Chicago, where you’ll have time to sit back in your cabin or the Dome Car as you traverse the Great Plains arriving into Chicago on Day 8.

• Day 9-10 • Chicago

  Breeze into the “Windy City” where you’ll have two full days and nights to sample the signature deep dish pizzas and ride the “L” around the city; also made famous as the set of many memorable and atmospheric blockbuster movies.

• Day 11-12 • Chicago to New York

  It’s all aboard the Lake Shore Limited Amtrak overnight service today in Viewliner Roomette accommodation to New York for a two-night stay.

• Day 13 • New York

  Spend time in the “Big Apple”, which needs no introduction!

• Day 14-15 • Return to UK

  Overnight flight back to UK, landing in London on Day 15.
