Autumn is another excellent time to visit, with generally pleasant temperatures and fewer visitors in some areas. Winters are mild compared with much of mainland Europe, making Madeira a good choice for a winter sun holiday. However, rainfall and temperatures can vary between the coast and the mountainous interior.

Funchal

Funchal is Madeira’s lively capital and one of the best places to stay for visitors who want a mixture of culture, sightseeing and restaurants. Explore the historic Old Town, visit the Mercado dos Lavradores and discover the island’s gardens. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is a particularly popular attraction, while the cable car provides wonderful views over the city and harbour. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood, sample Madeira wine and take in the coastal views. It is also a great stop when exploring the south coast, particularly when combined with a visit to nearby Cabo Girão.

Porto Moniz

Porto Moniz is a scenic coastal town in the north-west of Madeira, best known for its natural volcanic swimming pools. The surrounding landscape features dramatic cliffs, green mountains and rugged coastline. It is an excellent destination for a day trip, especially for visitors who want to experience Madeira’s natural beauty away from the capital.

Santana

Located on Madeira’s north coast, Santana is famous for its traditional triangular houses with thatched roofs. The town offers an insight into Madeira’s heritage and is surrounded by lush countryside and mountain scenery. Ponta de São Lourenço

Its drier, more rugged scenery contrasts with the island’s greener interior. Pico do Arieiro is one of Madeira’s most spectacular viewpoints, with mountain peaks that often rise above a sea of clouds.
