Explore Korea’s Irresistible Food

Bibimbap sums up Korean food – warm rice topped with garnishes and Gochujang – alongside Samgyeopsal. Typical meals comprise small plates arranged on a Sang dining table – beginning with rice and soup, followed by banchan side dishes and seafood, meat, and vegetable mains (and Kimchi of course). Visit a Gogi-jip to enjoy ssam leaf wraps with meat, vegetables, and ssamjang sauce. The perfect way to enjoy all these in one go is at a Korean barbecue – the fun of grilling meat and wrapping ssam with Doenjangjjigae and fried rice to finish.

What is there to do in Korea?

1. Korea is packed with incredible landscapes, from dramatic mountains and peaceful forests to beautiful coastlines. Take a hike through one of the country’s many national parks, such as Bukhansan National Park, or explore the scenic trails around Jeju Island. With routes to suit all abilities, it’s a great way to experience South Korea’s natural beauty and escape the bustle of the cities.

2. Korea’s fascinating history by visiting ancient palaces, temples and traditional villages. In Seoul, explore Gyeongbokgung Palace and wander through the charming streets of Bukchon Hanok Village, where traditional Korean houses sit alongside modern city life. It’s the perfect way to experience the country’s rich heritage and culture.

3. Food lovers are spoilt for choice in Korea. Explore bustling markets such as Gwangjang Market in Seoul, where you can sample Korean favourites including tteokbokki, mandu and Korean pancakes. From lively street-food stalls to traditional restaurants, there are plenty of opportunities to discover new flavours and enjoy authentic Korean cuisine.

4. For a taste of Korea’s natural side, head to Jeju Island. Explore volcanic landscapes, dramatic coastlines and beautiful beaches, or visit the impressive Hallasan Mountain, South Korea’s highest peak. With waterfalls, caves and scenic walking trails to discover, Jeju Island is perfect for those looking to add a little adventure to their holiday.

When is the best time of the year to visit?

The best time of year to visit Korea is during the spring and autumn months. During this time, the weather is mild and comfortable, making it perfect for exploring the country’s vibrant cities, historic landmarks and beautiful natural scenery. Spring brings colourful cherry blossoms, while autumn offers stunning foliage and cooler temperatures, making both seasons ideal for sightseeing and outdoor adventures.

Basic understanding of Korean dress and tipping etiquette?

Although there’s no strict dress etiquette, it’s polite to take off your shoes before entering a house. If you want to make lasting memories in Korea; wearing hanbok (traditional dress) is a great idea with many places near royal palaces and main attractions offering hanbok hire. Royal palaces like Gyeongbokgung and Deoksugung even offer free admission to visitors in hanbok! Tipping is not customary or expected in Korea – service staff, taxi drivers, and hotel workers are paid good wages and great service is part of the job.
