The Sky Islands

Arizona's Sky Islands rise straight out of the desert floor - cactus at the base, pine and fir at the summit — creating what's often called the most biodiverse region in the United States, all within a range you could drive across in an afternoon. Spend the morning the morning on a nature tour with one of the world's foremost experts on this ecosystem, then head back to Tucson for an afternoon exploring this historic, and delicious, city. The next day is spent hiking or rock climbing with a Navajo guide, discovering what this landscape means to him and his people.

Petrified Forest National Park

From the blue-and-lavender Badlands of the Blue Mesa Trail to the crystal-flecked logs of the Crystal Forest - sparkling where two hundred million years of pressure turned wood to stone - the Petrified Forest is a park unlike anywhere else in the country. See “Old Faithful,” a ten-foot petrified log on the Giant Logs Trail, then catch the Painted Desert at sunset, when the Badlands turn every shade between rust and violet.

Meteor Crater & Flagstaff

Three-quarters of a mile across and five hundred feet deep, Meteor Crater was punched into the earth fifty thousand years ago by a meteorite the size of a house - it is the best-preserved impact crater on Earth, and NASA trained the Apollo astronauts here. From there, visit Lowell Observatory for a star party under some of the clearest skies in the country. Then take a day to explore Flagstaff, the world's first International Dark Sky City, and a great base to for outdoor adventures.

Route 66

Arizona is home to the best-preserved stretch of Route 66 in the country. Drive it from its most famous, and historic town, Seligman to the old gold-minging town of Oatman, where wild burros wander the main street and staged gunfights still break out on the boardwalk.
