Hays Travel’s apprenticeship scheme in Scotland has received high praise in its latest inspection report.
A recent visit by His Majesty's Inspectorate of Education in Scotland (HMIE), judged the UK’s largest independent travel agent’s programme to be ‘Excellent’ in Leadership and Management; ‘Excellent’ in Delivery of Training; and ‘Very Good’ in Progress and Outcomes.
The inspectors assessed the quality of Hays Travel’s training provision in Scotland and its overall experience.
During the visit, they met with colleagues and other stakeholders to explore how the programme is delivered; and with apprentices themselves to evaluate how well their learning needs are met.
Alongside developing their vocational knowledge, apprentices gain valuable life experience
Rachael Allen, Hays Travel’s Head of Apprenticeships, said: “Improving the overall experience of our provision has been a key focus for us and we are very proud we can support colleagues beyond the classroom.
“Actions we have taken include providing breakfast on training days; helping with travel, uniform and equipment costs; offering financial wellbeing assistance; implementing flexible learning arrangements; delivering additional coaching sessions; and engaging with family members and carers, where appropriate.”
The inspectors highlighted many areas of positive progress, while no areas for development were identified in five of seven potential sections of the report.
It stated: “All apprentices receive a well-structured and well-organised induction programme that introduces them to all aspects of their work role. This prepares apprentices well for meeting the standards and expectations of their programme.”
Dame Irene Hays, Owner and Director of Hays Travel, said: “Our apprenticeship programme gives people the skills and confidence to thrive in their careers.
“Alongside developing their vocational knowledge, apprentices gain valuable life experience and immediately start contributing to the business.
“Around a quarter of managers in our Scottish stores are graduates of the scheme, demonstrating its success in nurturing future talent.”
