What It's Really Like to Explore the Baltic Capitals with Riviera Travel

24/06/2026

In May, 23 Hays Travel agents joined Riviera Travel on an escorted tour through three of Northern Europe's most captivating capitals: Helsinki, Tallinn, and Riga. What followed was a journey filled with fascinating history, beautiful architecture, hidden gems, and the kind of insider knowledge that transforms sightseeing into storytelling.

Interested in an escorted tour of the Baltic capitals for yourself? Here's what we discovered along the way.

Why Choose a Riviera Travel Escorted Tour?

Let's start with the question many travellers ask first.

Why choose a touring holiday rather than travelling independently?

The answer became clear from day one.

With Riviera Travel, everything is carefully planned, from centrally located hotels and comfortable transfers to knowledgeable local guides who bring each destination to life. Rather than worrying about logistics, you're free to focus on the experience itself. The beauty of this Helsinki, Tallinn and Riga tour is that it combines three countries and three fascinating cultures in one seamless itinerary. No airport stress. No navigating unfamiliar transport systems. Just expert guidance, great company, and more time to enjoy each destination.

Stop One: Helsinki

Where Nordic Cool Meets Seaside Charm

Finland's capital often flies under the radar compared to some of Europe's bigger cities, but that's exactly what makes it such a surprise.

Set on the shores of the Baltic Sea, Helsinki blends elegant architecture, contemporary design, fascinating history, and a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere. Walking through the city feels refreshingly easy. Wide boulevards lead to bustling market squares, stylish cafes sit alongside historic buildings, and the sea is never far away.

Top Tip: Make time to sample traditional Finnish cinnamon buns and coffee. Finland consistently ranks among the world's biggest coffee-loving nations, and after one visit, you'll understand why.

Highlights include: Senate Square, Helsinki Cathedral, the buzzing Market Square, and the remarkable Temppeliaukio Church, famously carved directly into solid rock.

Stop Two: Tallinn

Europe's Fairytale Capital

If someone asked you to imagine a medieval city straight from a storybook, you'd probably picture Tallinn.

Estonia's capital boasts one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Europe, and it's easy to see why it's earned UNESCO World Heritage status. As you pass through the ancient city gates, you'll discover winding cobbled streets, colourful merchant houses, hidden courtyards, church spires, and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the terracotta rooftops below.

The atmosphere here feels wonderfully timeless.

Don't Miss: The panoramic views from Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform are among the most photographed scenes in Estonia, and for good reason.

Highlights Include: The fairytale Old Town, Toompea Castle, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Town Hall Square, medieval city walls, and breathtaking rooftop views.

Stop Three: Riga

The Baltic's Best-Kept Secret

If Helsinki is sophisticated and Tallinn is enchanting, Riga is effortlessly stylish.

Latvia's capital often surprises first-time visitors with its grand architecture, colourful cafe culture, and lively atmosphere.

The city is home to one of Europe's finest collections of Art Nouveau architecture, with beautifully decorated facades lining elegant boulevards throughout the city centre. Beyond the architecture, Riga's UNESCO-listed Old Town offers charming squares, historic churches, bustling markets, and plenty of opportunities to stop for coffee and watch the world go by.

It's a city that feels both historic and contemporary at the same time.

Top Tip: Keep your camera handy. Riga's Art Nouveau district contains some of the most beautiful buildings anywhere in Europe.

Highlights include: The Art Nouveau district, House of the Black Heads, Riga Cathedral, Dome Square, Riga Central Market, and elegant boulevards lined with architectural masterpieces.

Favourite Moment from the Tour

Ask anyone on the trip what their favourite moment was, and you'll likely get 23 different answers. From unexpected views and local encounters to memorable meals and magical city walks, these are the moments our Hays Travel agents are still talking about long after returning home.

Finding the Hidden Side of Tallinn

While Tallinn's fairytale Old Town steals the spotlight, some of my favourite moments came from venturing a little further. Walking along the historic Hellemann Tower and city walls offered incredible views across the red rooftops, while Balti Jaama Market was perfect for soaking up local life. I also loved discovering the peaceful Japanese Garden at Kadriorg Palace. My top tip? Pack comfortable shoes and a portable charger—you'll be too busy exploring to stop!

Embracing the Finnish Way of Life

What struck me most about Helsinki was how happy and welcoming it felt. It's regularly ranked among the world's happiest cities, and you can genuinely feel that atmosphere when you're there. I loved experiencing Finland's famous sauna culture. There seemed to be one around every corner, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. If you have time, don't miss the Flying Cinema Experience near Market Square; it's a fun and unique way to see Helsinki from a whole new perspective.

Seeing Riga from the Water

One of my favourite memories from the entire trip was the canal cruise along the Daugava River in Riga. It offered a completely different perspective of the city, gliding past beautiful architecture while the sunshine danced on the water. Riga has such a fun energy, but out on the river, everything felt wonderfully peaceful. It was the perfect way to slow down, soak up the scenery, and reflect on an unforgettable journey through the Baltic capitals.
