One of the greatest joys of travelling around New Zealand is how quickly the landscape transforms.

The North Island welcomes you with volcanic landscapes, rolling vineyards, and colourful cities. Auckland, affectionately known as the City of Sails, is surrounded by water, meaning you'll never be far from a beautiful harbour, island ferry, or waterfront restaurant. Spend the morning browsing boutique shops and lively markets before hopping on a ferry to Waiheke Island, where acclaimed wineries, olive groves, and coastal walks create the perfect day out.

Further south, Rotorua introduces a completely different side of New Zealand. Steam rises from bubbling geothermal pools, geysers burst into life without warning, and the scent of sulphur drifts through the air, reminding you that this landscape is very much alive. It's also one of the best places to experience Māori culture, where storytelling, traditional performances, and authentic hāngī feasts offer a meaningful insight into the country's heritage.

Then there's Wellington. Compact, creative, and effortlessly cool, New Zealand's capital is packed with independent cafés, craft breweries, waterfront walks, and a thriving arts scene. It may be small, but it has a personality that leaves a lasting impression.

Cross over to the South Island, and the scenery becomes even more dramatic.

Queenstown often steals the spotlight, and it's easy to see why. Surrounded by towering mountains and sitting beside the crystal-clear waters of Lake Wakatipu, it's a playground for every type of traveller. Plus, adrenaline seekers can experience everything from jet boating and bungy jumping to skydiving.

Not far away lies Milford Sound, where waterfalls tumble hundreds of metres down sheer cliffs and dolphins frequently swim alongside passing boats. Often wrapped in mist, this spectacular fiord feels almost mythical. For equally breathtaking scenery, head towards Lake Tekapo. Its striking turquoise water, colourful lupins in spring, and remarkably dark skies have made it one of the country's most photographed locations.
