A First-Timer’s Guide to Norway with Hurtigruten: Agent Insight
23/10/2026
Fancy discovering Norway beyond the usual cruise itinerary? Think dramatic fjords, charming coastal communities, authentic Norwegian flavours, and nights spent stargazing with a hot chocolate in hand. Hurtigruten offers a wonderfully different way to explore Norway, and our Social Media Manager Natalie has experienced it first-hand. Here’s what she loved about sailing from Bergen to Oslo aboard MS Trollfjord, and why a Hurtigruten cruise should be your next Norwegian adventure.
What Is a Hurtigruten Cruise Like?
“As someone who loves cruising, I was really looking forward to travelling with Hurtigruten, as I'd heard so much about them from colleagues, but experiencing it first-hand was something else!
This isn't your typical cruise. It's a journey that's completely rooted in Norway, and that's what makes it unlike anything I've experienced – it's authentic travel on another level. The local crew are incredibly warm and welcoming, and it’s very noticeable everywhere onboard. They genuinely take the time to chat, share stories, crack jokes, and make you feel part of the experience.
The Expedition Team are equally passionate about showcasing Hurtigruten’s homeland. From onboard talks about Norwegian food, culture and history, to stargazing on deck with a hot chocolate in hand, it’s a truly fascinating and enriching way to discover this incredible country.
Discover Norwegian Culture, Cuisine, and Local Flavours
And it doesn’t stop there! The food and drink give you a real taste of Norway and elevate the experience even more. In fact, more than 80% of the food served onboard is sourced from Norwegian suppliers. The food is some of the freshest and most flavoursome I’ve ever tasted whilst travelling.
From freshly caught seafood and dishes seasoned with smoked seaweed salt, to cheese boards from local producers (including one of the best blue cheeses I've ever tasted) and traditional Norwegian desserts, food is clearly taken very seriously onboard. I was also surprised to find three dining venues on the Signature ships, giving plenty of choice throughout your voyage.
It all adds up to such an immersive experience.
A Norwegian Coastal Voyage with a Fascinating History
I found it fascinating that Hurtigruten originally started as a way of connecting communities along the coastline, with the holiday experience coming later. That heritage still feels very much alive onboard.
So, if you want to really experience Norway, this is the way to do it. The smaller ship experience means you can get closer to the coastline and reach fjords that many larger ships simply can't.
Every element felt cultural, meaningful, insightful, and memorable. Looking back, the phrase that sums it up perfectly is:
“I came to see Norway… I left feeling part of it.
Hurtigruten Signature Voyages vs the Original Coastal Express
Hurtigruten offers two distinct ways to experience Norway. Natalie and the team travelled on one of the Signature Voyages, which offer a more traditional cruise-style experience with longer stays in port, all-inclusive dining and drinks, and enhanced onboard activities.
For those looking for something even more authentic, the Coastal Express follows Hurtigruten's original route, calling at 34 ports along Norway's spectacular coastline. Port stops can range from a few minutes to several hours, and you'll travel alongside local Norwegians using the service as part of everyday life.
Whichever voyage you choose, expect breathtaking scenery, fascinating local culture, and a deeper connection to Norway than you might expect from a traditional cruise.
Go where the sky tells stories… and make one of your own with Hurtigruten
Where better to explore with Hurtigruten than the place they know best, their own historic homeland? This is not just a cruise; it’s a voyage through the living storybook of Norway, where every fjord whispers legends, every harbour tells a tale, and every meal serves up a taste of tradition.
