FAQ's about Mauritius Rupees
Your daily travel budget in Mauritius varies depending on whether you stick to local eateries or tourist hotspots. On average, budget MUR 1,500 to MUR 3,000 per day. Coastal resorts, excursions, and popular beaches are generally more expensive, while inland towns and local cafés are cheaper. Factor in meals, taxis, entry fees, and spending money.
The Mauritian Rupee (MUR / Rs) comes in both coins and banknotes.
Coins: Rs 1, Rs 5, Rs 10, Rs 20
Banknotes: Rs 25, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 200, Rs 500, Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000
Smaller denominations are helpful for taxis, markets, and smaller shops.
Yes — cash is widely accepted across Mauritius. Local shops, markets, street vendors, taxis, and smaller cafés often prefer cash, especially away from main tourist areas. Having cash on hand makes day‑to‑day purchases easier.
In tourist areas, some hotels or shops may accept Euros or US Dollars, but rates can be unfavourable. Everyday purchases elsewhere require Mauritian Rupees. For the best value, always pay in MUR.
Tipping isn’t mandatory but is appreciated. At restaurants, a 5–10% tip is common if service isn’t already included. Hotel staff, drivers, and guides also appreciate small discretionary tips.
Meal costs vary widely:
Street food & local snacks: MUR 50–200
Local restaurants: MUR 200–500
Mid‑range dining: MUR 500–1,000 per person
Tourist restaurants: MUR 1,000+
Street food such as dholl puri, roti, or mine frire offers excellent value.
It’s recommended to buy enough MUR to cover your first few days, including food, taxis, and small purchases. Many local vendors and services operate on a cash‑only basis, so maintaining a good supply of cash throughout your stay is helpful.
Buy MUR when the exchange rate is favourable. Monitoring rates in the weeks before your trip can help secure better value and avoid sudden fluctuations.
The Mauritian Rupee is only used in Mauritius. Neighbouring islands such as Réunion and Seychelles use their own currencies.
We’ll buy back any unused Mauritian Rupees purchased through our Buy Back Scheme, helping you reclaim value after your trip.
You can buy Mauritian Rupees via Click & Collect, by visiting a branch, or using home delivery before you travel.
Carrying cash is generally safe, but sensible precautions are recommended. Keep your money in a secure wallet or money belt, avoid showing large sums in public, and use your hotel safe for storing extra cash.
