Visit Skanderbeg Square and the National History Museum
At the very heart of Tirana, Skanderbeg Square is where the pulse of the city beats loudest. It’s a vast, open space that brings together some of Albania’s most iconic landmarks in one place. You’ll find locals relaxing on benches, kids riding scooters, and a lively atmosphere that changes from peaceful in the morning to buzzing by sunset. Just off the square, the National History Museum stands out with its enormous mosaic mural known as The Albanians, a tribute to the country’s long and complex story.

Ride the Dajti Ekspres Cable Car
Ready for some fresh mountain air and spectacular views? Hop aboard the Dajti Ekspres, a scenic 15-minute cable car ride that glides up Mount Dajti, just on the edge of the city. As you ascend, the noise of the traffic fades and Tirana unfolds beneath you like a colourful patchwork. Once at the top, you’re in a different world – cool, green, and peaceful. Once your there theres plenty to enjoy, from hiking trails through pine forests to a panoramic rotating restaurant (yes, it spins!).

Explore Bunk'Art 2
Tirana has a unique way of telling its history, and nowhere is this more striking than Bunk’Art 2. Hidden beneath the city centre in a once top-secret Cold War-era nuclear bunker, this museum feels like a time capsule brought to life. It offers an immersive, sometimes haunting, look at Albania’s communist past – especially the feared secret police, or Sigurimi, who left a lasting scar on the nation’s collective memory. A visit here will give you a deeper understanding of modern Albania.

Food & Drink in Tirana
Tirana’s food scene is all about flavour, freshness, and good company. Start with tavë kosi, a rich and creamy baked dish of lamb and rice in yoghurt that’s a national favourite. Or try byrek, a flaky pastry filled with cheese, spinach, or minced meat – perfect as a snack or starter. Grilled fish and seafood, especially from the nearby coast, are simply prepared but full of flavour, usually served with a generous splash of lemon and a side of roasted vegetables or salad. Don’t miss trileçe, a heavenly dessert made with sponge cake soaked in three kinds of milk – soft, sweet, and utterly addictive. To drink, Albanian wine is growing in popularity, so look for labels from the Berat or Shkodra regions – and a post-meal glass of raki is practically a tradition.
