  The Canary island of Gran Canaria is famous for its black lava and white sand beaches; from bustling Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico to quieter San Augustin and Puerto de Mogan. Surfing fans can make a beeline for Pozo Izquierdo for some great waves and adventurers can hike at the Jurassic-like Caldera de Bandama or climb up to Roque Nublo for 360-degree island vistas. The capital of La Palmas is a Mecca for duty-free shopping, its historic Vegueta old town, Las Canteras urban beach, and marine life at Poema del Mar; while the nearby Jardin Botanico Canario Viera y Clavijo is the perfect escape. The awe-inspiring Dunas de Maspalomas are a must-see sight or step back to pre-Hispanic times at Cueva Pintada Museum. Get up close to wildlife and see dolphins, turtles, seals, toucans, and orchids at Palmitos Park – the biggest zoological park in the Canary Islands - or swap seals for slides at Aqualand Maspalomas Water Park, a ten-minute ride away.

  The island of St Vincent is found between Grenada and St Lucia in the Caribbean Sea. St Vincent is famous for its white-sand beaches, clear water, and colourful markets; making it ideal for relaxation. Explore St Vincent's capital city, Kingstown, with its St George's Anglican Cathedral, St Mary's Catholic Cathedral, and also St Vincent Botanical Gardens filled with hibiscus, nutmeg, palms, mahogany, and breadfruit trees. Head to nearby Fort Charlotte, built in the 1800s, for great views and a collection of art; while nature lovers can hike Vermont Nature Trail in search of the endemic Saint Vincent parrot. Take a drive along the 40-kilometre-long Leeward Highway Scenic Drive that runs from Kingstown; passing local villages, coconut plantations, black-sand beaches, Carib Rock, and Barrouaillie fishing village en route to Richmond Beach - gateway to distant vistas of the active La Soufrière volcano and also Falls of Baleine.

  The capital of Brazil's north-eastern state of Pernambuco, Recife is renowned for its rivers, bridges, peninsulas, and islets. The place is also famous for the Recife and Olinda carnivals with their extravagant balls and parades. Explore the market of Mercado de Sao Jose or witness the displays in Museu do Estado de Pernambuco state museum in the Fort Cinco Pontes. See the animals in Dois Irmaos Park and then explore the park's large forest grounds and botanical gardens. Head to one of the many beaches in Recife to lounge on the sun-drenched sand; particularly popular choices are Boa Viagem, Pina, and Brasília Teimosa.

  Salvador is the capital of the state of Bahia in Brazil and comprises the upper and lower towns connected by a number of lifts and steep streets. Explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Pelourinho old town which is awash with 17th and 18th-century colonial buildings. Discover the abundant churches including the amazing Sao Francisco Church and Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim. Shop for local handicrafts at Mercado Modelo and colourful local produce and flavourings at Feira de Sao Joaquim. Salvador's week-long carnival - one of the biggest in the world - boasts parades, live entertainment, music, and dancing. Spend a few hours on one of the many beaches to enjoy the calm waters and miles of sun-drenched golden sands.

• Day 19-20: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  Step ashore in the vibrant and exciting seaside city of Rio de Janeiro. Mention Rio and the first things that come to mind are the 38-metre high Christ the Redeemer statue atop Mount Corcovado, Sugar Loaf Mountain, and the famous carnival. Spend time on the famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches or visit Chilean-born artist Jorge Selaron's fascinating Escadaria Selaron stairway. Pay a call to the sculptures and art-adorned pavilions at Passeio Publico then continue on to Parque do Flamengo and the nearby Museum of Modern Art. The ancient Nossa Senhora de Campo church and Sao Bento church and monastery contrast with the modern-day Catedral de Sao Sebastiao. Explore the atmospheric Santa Teresa district or discover the exhibits at the National Museum at Quinta da Boa Vista. Take a boat trip over to Ilha de Paqueta to witness the sights from the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage.

• Day 21: Santos (for Sao Paulo), Brazil

  The ship docks today at Santos, close to the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo. Santos is a picturesque port town overlooking the Bay of Santos and famous for its magnificent beaches and the beautiful Orchid Gardens. Indulge in a spot of culture as you explore the history of Brazil's coffee trade at Museu do Cafe. Ride around the historic centre of Santos on one of the ancient trams. Get up close to the marine life at the Aquarium Municipal de Santos or gaze in awe at the colourful orchids, animals, and birds at Municipal Orchidarium. Admire the artworks on display at Pinacoteca Benedicto Calixto or learn about Brazil's most famous footballer, Pele (also known as Edson Arantes do Nascimento), at Museu Pele.

  Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital city, sits alongside Montevideo Bay. Plaza de la Independencia is the main hub of the city and leads to the Ciudad Vieja old town with its colonial houses, art deco buildings, and fascinating landmarks such as Palacio Salvo and the Solis Theatre. Admire the international artworks and surrounding Japanese gardens at the Museum of Fine Arts - Juan Manuel Blanes. Climb up to Fortaleza del Cerro to enjoy panoramic views of the city and beyond. No visit to Montevideo would be complete without enjoying parilla-grilled fare at one of the steakhouses at Mercado Del Puerto or tasting the traditional yerba mate tea. Spend a few hours soaking up the sunshine on the golden sands of Pocitos Beach or take a leisurely stroll along La Rambla promenade.

• Day 28: Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

  Step ashore in Port Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands; found on the north-facing slope of East Falkland Island. Learn more about the 1982 Falklands War, maritime and natural history, and Antarctic heritage on a visit to the Historic Dockyard Museum. Stroll along the waterfront and admire the unique whalebone arch at the entrance to the 18th-century Christ Church Cathedral. No visit here would be complete without getting up close to the resident penguins; head to Gypsy Cove to see the colonies of Magellanic penguins, watch Gentoo penguins swimming at Bluff Cove, or visit the grey and white King penguins at Volunteer Point. Keep your camera handy as you may also catch sight of sea lions, elephant seals, dolphins, steamer ducks, black-browed albatrosses, and rock cormorants.

  The city of Punta Arenas sits near the tip of the southernmost Patagonia region in Chile. Located on the Strait of Magellan that connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans; Punta Arenas is the gateway to Antarctica. Step ashore and visit Plaza Gamero to admire the memorial to the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, before viewing a replica of one of his galleons at Museo Nao Victoria. The nearby 19th-century Casa Braun-Menendez and the ornate 18th-century Palacio Sara Stroll are well worth visiting too. Step back to pioneer days at Instituto de la Patagonia. Museo Regional de Magallanes is housed in an opulent mansion and explores the life of 19th-century pioneer sheep farmers. View a collection of antique farming and industrial machinery and a typical pioneer shearing shed and house at Museo del Recuerdo.

  The port city of Puerto Montt is the capital of Chile's Lake District and is famous for being the gateway to the Patagonian fjords and the Andes mountains. There's plenty to do when you go ashore; from dining on the freshest local seafood or spending the day on a Pacific Ocean beach to setting off on an adventure to explore the Calbuco active volcano or the symmetrical Osorno Volcano. Visit the city’s Plaza de Armas square to admire the 19th-century neo-classical cathedral constructed from wood. Stop by the nearby Case del Arte Diego Rivera to view contemporary artworks by local and national artists. Venture outside the city and explore the delights of Caleta de Angelmo Market.

  San Antonio welcomes you with its lively port atmosphere and easy access to Chile’s stunning central coast. Stroll the bustling waterfront, sample fresh seafood, and explore nearby coastal towns like Cartagena and Algarrobo. With rolling hills, ocean breezes, and a relaxed seaside vibe, this gateway offers a warm introduction to Chile’s Pacific charm.

  The port city of Coquimbo sits on the Pan-American Highway and is the capital of Chile's Elqui Province. Coquimbo boasts La Herradura Beach where you can swim and sunbathe to your heart's content. Visit the 93-metre-high Cruz del Tercer Milenio holy pilgrimage site with its museum and prayer rooms; before riding the lift to the top. The 19th-century Fuerte Coquimbo showcases picturesque vistas of the bay and local pelicans and seabirds. Head to the restored Barrio Ingles (English District) to taste fresh seafood at the fish market by day and in the evening experience its vibrant nightlife scene. Coquimbo is also a popular spot for trekking, sport fishing, parasailing, and surfing. Ten kilometres away you'll find La Serena with its stunning beaches alongside the long Avenida del Mar, lively Plaza de Armas main square, Faro Monumental de La Serena lighthouse, and also the famous market at Recova which sells amazing arts and crafts.

  The port city of Arica is famous for its surfing beaches and is located in northern Chile. Climb the path up to Morro Arica hill to take in the panoramic vistas and pay a visit to Museo Historico y de Armas war museum. Gaze in awe at the Gothic San Marcos Cathedral, which was designed and built in metal and wood in 1876 by famous French architect Gustave Eiffel. Visit the natural surroundings of La Cuevas de Anzota by the sea or learn about the Mummies of Chinchorro at Museo Arqueologico San Miguel de Azapa in the nearby town of Azapa. The high plains of the Andes mountain range rise to the east of Arica and are home to the scenic Lauca National Park and Chungara Lake.

  Callao offers a vibrant gateway to the culture and history of coastal Peru. Explore its bustling port atmosphere, wander through the colorful colonial streets of nearby Lima, and admire landmarks like the elegant Plaza de Armas and the historic Monastery of San Francisco. With rich heritage, oceanfront charm, and easy access to world‑class museums and cuisine, Callao sets the stage for an unforgettable Peruvian experience.

• Day 52-53: Fuerte Amador, Panama

  The mile-long man-made peninsula of Fuerte Amador sits at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. Fuerte Amador is home to the Smithsonian Institute of Tropical Research and gateway to vibrant Panama City. Pay a visit to Miraflores Visitor Center; which offers an immersive tour of the Canal including a 3-D experience, four exhibition halls, and an observation deck. Meander through Panama City's Casco Viejo; from Plaza de la Independencia and Catedral Metropolitana to Iglesia y Convento de la Compania de Jesus, Paseo de las Bovedas, and Plaza de Francia. Culture fans can make a beeline for BioMuseo, Museo de Arte Comtemporaneo, and Museo del Canal Interoceanico. Maybe stretch your legs and admire the views along the scenic Cinta Costera on the waterfront. An hour's drive from Panama City takes you to the Rainforest Discovery Center; where you can get up-close to nature and wildlife - from monkeys and sloths to toucans and hummingbirds.

• Day 53: Panama Canal (Full Transit)

  The Panama Canal bisects the country just to the west of Panama City and was opened in August 1914 with a third, wider lane of locks added in June 2016. This artificial 82km-long waterway in Panama connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The banks of the canal are covered in rain forest and national parks. Central Panama stretches out from the canal across three provinces and into two oceans to comprise everything from the mountains of the Cordillera Central to the west, to the Caribbean coral reefs and colonial fortresses in the north, to the beaches of the Pearl Islands in the Bahía de Panamá (Bay of Panama) in the south. The coast on either side of the canal's Caribbean entrance offers the remains of colonial fortresses surrounded by jungle, half a dozen beaches, and mile upon mile of coral reef. The mountains to the east of the canal hold flora and fauna and indigenous Emberá villages.

• Day 55: Cartagena, Colombia

  Disembark in Colombia's Cartagena on the Caribbean coast. Discover cobbled streets, pretty plazas, old churches, and 13km of stone colonial walls. Visit the famous Palace of the Inquisition — which is a grisly museum featuring former instruments of torture from colonial times! Next, see Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas fortress, which dominates the skyline and includes a network of tunnels that you can enter. Enjoy beautiful buildings such as a convent founded in the 17th century and the stunning cathedral. Witness the palaces, mansions, and monasteries of the old town district — sampling local snacks and drinks on the way. Take a tour of the nearby mangroves and see colourful, local wildlife or hop on a boat to view Isla de Baru's white sand beaches and palm trees and Islas del Rosario's coral reefs.

  Today, you can admire the picture-perfect beaches and exotic flowers of Oranjestad — Aruba's main port and capital city. Stroll around the Dutch colonial buildings and shop for chocolates, Dutch-made porcelain, and jewellery — particularly gold which was mined here during the 19th century. If you love the sand and sea; you have Eagle Beach, Baby Beach, and Arashi Beach all within easy reach. Step on the ferry to Palm Island and relax on the white sand or splash around at the water park. Take an off-road vehicle tour of the wild northeast coast or visit a former gold mine. You can also explore the Quadiriki and Fontein Caves at Arikok National Park; get up close to animals at Donkey Sanctuary Aruba and Aruba Ostrich Farm; and dine at one of the city's seafood restaurants on the waterfront.

• Day 58: Curacao

  The Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao is home to beautiful colonial architecture and beaches. Head to Cas Abao or Playa Porto Marie to soak up the sun or, for the more adventurous, try out scuba diving and snorkelling at Playa Lagun. Visit Handelskade and stroll along the picturesque stretch of pier to admire the brightly-coloured Dutch colonial buildings across St Anna Bay. Uncover over 450 species of plants and native wildlife along the driving and hiking trails around Christoffel National Park. Kura Hulanda Museum offers a wide range of artefacts, relics, and artworks which trace the history of the African slave trade on Curacao. Finish off your day enjoying a coffee whilst admiring the boats sailing through the open arm of the floating Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge.

  Grenada is a Caribbean country comprising smaller surrounding islands and the main island also called Grenada. Referred to as the 'Spice Isle'; Grenada is home to numerous nutmeg plantations. A crater lake in an extinct volcano, Grand Etang Lake, is a fascinating place to visit. Discover the art of traditional-style rum-making at River Antoine Rum Distillery and marvel at scenic views from the hilltop early-18th-century Fort George. The cascading waters and lush surroundings of Annandale Falls will leave you in awe and the pretty harbour and fishing destination of The Carenage is the perfect spot for a peaceful stroll along the water's edge. Splash in the water, sunbathe, or snorkel near the powder-white shores of Grand Anse Beach.

• Day 61: Bridgetown, Barbados

  The port city of Bridgetown nestles on Barbados' southwest coast. It's easy to see why Bridgetown is known as 'Little England' with its colonial architecture, Lord Nelson Statue, and Parliament Square. Explore National Heroes Square, Trafalgar Square, St Michael's Cathedral, the 1000-year-old Baobab tree in Queen's Park, and the Garrison Historic area. Delve into Barbados's Jewish history on a visit to the UNESCO-listed Nidhe Israel Synagogue's museum and indulge in retail therapy on Broad Street. Make a beeline for Carlisle Bay with its six shipwreck dive sites, Browne's Beach, and yacht club. Admire stunning views and rugged island landscapes on a jeep island safari or witness the dramatic stalactites and stalagmites of Harrison's Cave. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience - sail on a catamaran to swim with hawksbill and green sea turtles.

• Day 62: Castries, Saint Lucia

  Arrive in Castries, the capital city of St Lucia. Step ashore and shop for bargains at La Place Carenage Shopping Plaza in downtown Castries, or venture to the heart of the city to the vibrant Central Market. Pay a visit to the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Derek Walcott Square, and the Government House; before climbing to the top of Morne Fortune to view Fort Charlotte. Spend a few hours at Vigie Beach or head south to Marigot Bay. Take an island tour and admire the majestic Piton Mountains, snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Half-Moon Bay, or enjoy a picnic on a lemon grass lawn at Pigeon Island National Park.

  The independent Commonwealth country of Antigua and Barbuda sits where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet and comprises two namesake islands and a few smaller ones. It is famous for its secluded pink and white sand beaches surrounded by palm trees; which are the perfect locations to explore and relax. Hike through the rainforest to get to Rendezvous Bay, one of Antigua's most remote but nevertheless stunning beaches; or take a rainforest canopy tour by zip-wire. Get up close and personal with the marine life as you swim with stingrays at Stingray City or encounter the local birdlife at Frigate Bird Sanctuary. Get cultural at English Harbour’s Georgian-era marina, Nelson's Dockyard, which was made a UNESCO World Heritage site. St John's, the islands’ capital, boasts the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, St John’s Cathedral, and the 17th-century Government House.

• Day 65: St Maarten

  The Leeward Island of St Maarten is dual-owned - one side is French and the other side is Dutch - and offers a cosmopolitan culture, first-class dining, international shopping, and a laid-back atmosphere. Ride down the world's steepest zip line - the Flying Dutchman at Rockland Estate eco-adventure park. Relax in a treehouse-style cabana or experience the fun Fly Zone at Loterie Farm nature sanctuary in Pic Paradis. Visit Philipsburg to buy duty-free goods along Front Street and local crafts, fabrics, and handmade jewellery on Old Street. Head to Maho Beach to watch aeroplanes taking off and landing at close quarters at the island's airport. Encounter an array of macaws and iguanas at St Maarten Zoo or see the colourful butterflies and tropical flora at The Butterfly Farm. Savour a mouth-watering mix of French, Caribbean, and Creole cuisine at the beach town of Grand Case. Ascend the steps from Marigot up to the old Fort Louis for incredible island views or witness the historic cannons atop Fort Amsterdam near Philipsburg.

  Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands. The island is dominated by the dormant volcano Mount Teide; hop on a cable car to marvel at the views or take a hike along the trail. Tenerife is also known for its famous Carnaval de Santa Cruz with its spectacular parades, music, dancing, and colourful costumes. Siam Park is a Thai-themed water park packed with swimming pools, exhilarating slides, and plenty of family fun. Experience up-close encounters with gorillas, tigers, penguins, and other species at the landscaped Loro Park. Party animals can discover Playa de las Americas and its famed nightlife scene. Try your hand at windsurfing, kite surfing, or parasailing on El Medano Beach. The island’s capital, Santa Cruz, is home to Auditorio de Tenerife, Museum of Fine Arts, and Museum of Nature and Man. The UNESCO-listed colonial city of San Cristobal de la Laguna is well worth a visit too.
