Bratislava’s Old Town is a maze of cobbled streets, pastel-hued buildings, and quirky charm. It’s completely pedestrianised, so you can meander at your own pace without worrying about traffic. Discover hidden courtyards, browse artisan shops, and keep your eyes peeled for the city’s playful bronze statues – like the famous Čumil the Sewer Worker, popping out of a manhole with a grin. Grab a seat at a pavement café for some people-watching with a coffee or hot chocolate, and don’t miss the Gothic grandeur of St. Martin’s Cathedral, where Hungarian kings were once crowned.

The mighty Danube River flows right through Bratislava, and there’s no better way to take in the sights than from the water. Hop aboard a leisurely city cruise for a different perspective on the skyline or make a day of it with a trip to nearby Devin Castle. Perched dramatically on a cliff where the Danube meets the Morava River, these ancient ruins are steeped in legend, and the views over the surrounding valleys are absolutely worth the journey. Pack a picnic, explore the castle paths, and soak up the peaceful riverside atmosphere.

For a totally different angle on the city, head up to the top of the UFO Observation Deck – that flying saucer-shaped structure perched above the SNP Bridge. The lift whisks you up 95 metres for jaw-dropping 360° views across Bratislava, the Danube, and into Austria and Hungary. There’s even a sky-high restaurant if you fancy lunch with a view.

When it comes to food, Bratislava offers hearty portions, rich flavours, and a delicious blend of Central European traditions. One must-try dish is bryndzové halušky, pillowy potato dumplings smothered in tangy sheep cheese and topped with crispy bacon. If that doesn’t warm your soul, try kapustnica, a sauerkraut soup often filled with sausage, mushrooms, and a hint of smoky paprika. You’ll also spot plenty of Austrian-style schnitzel and goulash on menus, along with sweet treats like trdelník, a chimney-shaped pastry baked over hot coals, then rolled in cinnamon sugar, crushed nuts, or even chocolate. To drink, sample a glass of Slovak wine, especially from the nearby Little Carpathians region, known for its light, fruity whites.
