Tirana’s food scene is all about flavour, freshness, and good company. Start with tavë kosi, a rich and creamy baked dish of lamb and rice in yoghurt that’s a national favourite. Or try byrek, a flaky pastry filled with cheese, spinach, or minced meat – perfect as a snack or starter. Grilled fish and seafood, especially from the nearby coast, are simply prepared but full of flavour, usually served with a generous splash of lemon and a side of roasted vegetables or salad. Don’t miss trileçe, a heavenly dessert made with sponge cake soaked in three kinds of milk – soft, sweet, and utterly addictive. To drink, Albanian wine is growing in popularity, so look for labels from the Berat or Shkodra regions – and a post-meal glass of raki is practically a tradition.
