  Newcastle sits on the River Tyne in England's North East. Explore Tyneside's rich history at Discovery Museum and the Great North Museum, or learn about innovation and science at the Centre for Life. Indulge in retail therapy around Eldon Square or take a tour of St James' Park - home to Newcastle United Football Club. Escape to the tranquil surroundings of Jesmond Dene or step back in time at the open-air Beamish Museum. Cross Gateshead Millennium Bridge to visit Gateshead music centre and the BALTIC Centre of Contemporary Art; keeping your eyes peeled for the Angel of the North in the distance. Venture further afield to the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Durham City, Hadrian's Roman Wall and Alnwick Castle.

• Day 4: Edinburgh, Scotland

  Edinburgh is home to the famous Royal Mile which leads upwards to Edinburgh Castle. The streets of the city's Old Town are lined with medieval buildings, while its modern streets are filled with trendy bars, world-famous shops and innovative restaurants. Visit the Scottish Parliament Building, National Museum of Scotland, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and the beautiful Princes Street Gardens. You can tour the 16th-century Palace of Holyroodhouse — former home of Mary, Queen of Scots — and take a scenic stroll up Arthur's Seat. Step aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia or explore the world of whisky making at the Scotch Whisky Experience.

• Day 5: Invergordon, Scotland

  Invergordon is located on the north-shore of Cromarty Firth at the heart of the Highlands of Scotland. Pay a visit to Invergordon Naval & Heritage Museum, Cromarty Courthouse, and Hugh Miller's Cottage & Museum. Admire the colourful 'Off the Wall' murals painted on the side of the town's buildings. Take a trip in search of the Loch Ness monster at Loch Ness. Journey to nearby Inverness and explore Landmark Park, Cawdor Castle, Culloden Moor Battlefield, Glen Ord Distillery, and The Scottish Kiltmaker Visitor Centre.

• Day 7: Glasgow (Greenock), Scotland

  Arrive in Greenock - gateway to the vibrant city of Glasgow. Set on the River Clyde in the western Lowlands, Glasgow was voted the world's friendliest city. Hop on a City Sightseeing bus to take a whistle-stop tour of the city's famous attractions. Charles Rennie Mackintosh fans will love The Willow Tea Room, The Lighthouse, House of an Art Lover and the Glasgow School of Art. Pay a visit to Glasgow Science Museum or step aboard the Tall Ship: SV Glenlee on the waterfront. No visit to Scotland would be complete without sampling the region's 'water of life' - Scotch whisky - with a tour of Glengoyne Distillery. There's also family fun at Loch Lomond Aquarium and Snow Factor on the outskirts of the city.

• Day 8: Belfast, Ireland

  Belfast, capital of Northern Ireland, enjoys a wonderful setting of high hills, sea lough and river valley. Its name originated from the Gaelic ‘Beal Feirste’ meaning ‘mouth of the sandy fjord’. Founded in the 17th century, the city prospered becoming one of the world’s leading industrial names, and was home to Harland and Wolff – the shipbuilders who built the ill-fated Titanic. Despite its more recent political troubles, Belfast has emerged as a vibrant, alluring destination. Amidst its beautiful Victorian buildings you can shop in stylish boutiques, sip a Guinness in one of its charming old pubs or take a scenic stroll in Barnett Demesne park. The centrepiece is the City Hall, completed in 1906, with its domed roof and grand Italian marble staircase. Other points of interest on the city include Belfast Cathedral, which has the largest Celtic Cross in Ireland plus Celtic themed mosaics and stained glass, Belfast Castle, sitting on the slopes of Cave Hill, and Belfast Zoo.

• Day 9: Dublin, Ireland

  Experience the vibrant culture and famous Irish 'craic' in the Republic of Ireland’s capital city — Dublin. Pay a visit to the country's largest church - St Patrick's Cathedral - as well as Dublin Castle, National Museum of Ireland, and Irish Museum of Modern Art. Explore the gardens and elegant squares of Trinity College and sample a glass of the country's favourite drink on a tour of Guinness Storehouse at St James's Gate Brewery. Indulge in retail therapy at the city's premier shopping location, Grafton Street, or head to Phoenix Park to get up close to rare and exotic animals at Dublin Zoo. Wander the famous streets of the Temple Bar district and enjoy delicious food, live music, and traditional ales.

• Day 10: Holyhead, Wales

  Holyhead is located on the north-western tip of Wales and is the largest town on the Isle of Anglesey. Explore the port's maritime past at Holyhead Maritime Museum. Admire the medieval castle towns of Beaumaris, Conwy and Caernarfon along the Welsh coastline. Take a tour through the mountains, valleys and towns of the nearby Snowdonia National Park, with Mount Snowdon as its impressive backdrop. Get up close the animals, butterflies and reptiles at Pili Plas Nature World. Follow the 400 steps over to the South Stack Lighthouse on its own off-shore island.

• Day 11: Waterford, Ireland

  Step ashore today in the beautiful seaport of Waterford in southeast Ireland. Dating back to Viking times, this magical city still retains part of its ancient walled core and visits to Reginald's Tower, Bishop's Palace, the Waterford Museum of Treasures and the Viking Triangle reveal Waterford's fascinating heritage. Home to the famous hand-crafted Waterford Crystal glass manufacturer since 1783; you can explore how this glassware is created on a factory tour. Discover scenic countryside on a cycle ride or walk along the Waterford Greenway - a 46km off-road trail along the old railway line between Waterford and Dungarvan. Or why not follow the Waterford Garden Trail to admire the rich variety of flora and fauna at Abbey Road Gardens, Curraghmore House & Gardens, Lismore Castle Gardens, and Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens? Discover family-friendly fun at Activate Waterford, Hawkeye Falconry, Waterford & Suir Valley Railway, and the People's Park.

• Day 12: Fowey, United Kingdom

  Fowey is a historic harbour town on the west side of the Fowey Estuary in south Cornwall. Watch the fishing boats come and go, wander the crooked cobbled streets in search of gifts, try a clotted cream ice, or sip a pint of local Cornish ale in one of the time-worn taverns. Activity fans can wander on foot to panoramic Gribbin Head, passing through woods and past beaches and small coves; author Daphne du Maurier set some of her famous novels around here. Maybe follow the ‘Hall Walk’ along Pont Pill Creek or stroll along the esplanade to the beach at Readymoney Cove and St Catherine’s Castle. The nearby Eden Project features the world’s largest ‘captive’ tropical rainforest as well as a multitude of biomes, educational installations, and art works. While you’re in Cornwall, be sure to try one of the region’s most famous culinary exports, the Cornish pasty. Not forgetting a cream tea at one of the picturesque harbour side cafés – served the traditional way with cream on top and jam underneath.
