Why Visit the South of the USA
12/08/2025
The South doesn’t whisper, it sings the blues. From the smoky jazz joints of New Orleans to the red-rock drama of the Grand Canyon, this is a region that grabs you by the hand and pulls you into the dance. It’s spirited, sometimes sizzling, and always surprising. In this blog, we’re chasing Elvis through Memphis, soaking up soul in Nashville, riding into the sunset at an Arizona ranch, and swapping city lights for starry skies in Las Vegas to show you why the South of the USA should be your next holiday.
Elvis Presley's Memphis, New Orleans & Nashville
If the South had a heartbeat, it’d thrum to the basslines of Memphis and the brass bands of New Orleans. Step onto Beale Street, and the air practically buzzes with blues, barbecue smoke, and the sounds of a guitar. Memphis doesn’t care if you show up in cowboy boots or flip-flops, just come hungry for music and ribs.
Then there’s Graceland, where Elvis still holds court. Not just a house, a shrine, a story, a time machine where sequins sparkle and the 1970s never quite left. Swing south to New Orleans, where every corner could be a parade and every meal deserves jazz accompaniment.

Las Vegas
Somewhere between the cactus-scattered silence of the desert and the slot machine chimes of a casino floor, Las Vegas happens. It’s not Southern in the traditional sense, but it feels Southern-adjacent, loud, proud, and unafraid to wear a rhinestone jumpsuit to breakfast.
Las Vegas is a place where Eiffel Towers rub shoulders with pyramids, fountains dance to Frank Sinatra, and 4 am is considered an early night. Vegas is glitter-stained chaos, and that’s exactly the point. So, if you like a little thrill? You’ve found your playground.

Grand Canyon
If the South sings, the Grand Canyon is its epic drumroll. Vast. Silent. Majestic enough to make your jaw drop and your Wi-Fi irrelevant. One moment you’re squinting into rock and sky, the next, your soul’s doing somersaults.
Photos don’t do it justice. Words barely scratch the surface. Whether you’re peeking over the edge or hiking deep into its rust-red ribs, the Canyon doesn’t shout for attention. It waits. And when you see it… Well, you'll never forget how small it made you feel.

Tennessee
Tennessee isn’t just a state, it’s a song, a story, a tall glass of sweet tea on a porch somewhere between yesterday and tomorrow. Sure, Memphis gets the spotlight, but step beyond and you’ll find Nashville strumming its six-string soul, where cowboy boots click across honky-tonk floors and dreams hang thick in the air like southern heat.
Then, the Smoky Mountains rise like a lullaby wrapped in mist. Think fireflies, fiddle tunes, and fried chicken. Tennessee isn’t subtle, and it’s not trying to be. It wraps you in warmth and sends you home singing.

California
California might not be the first destination that comes to mind when you think of the South, but oh, it knows how to crash the party. It’s where desert meets ocean, where Hollywood glitz leans lazily against laid-back beach towns. Take a turn off the highway, and suddenly you’re standing beneath redwoods that feel like ancient gods.
California is mood swings in motion: Joshua Tree stillness one day, San Francisco fog the next. But stitched into its story are the same threads that run through the South: freedom, boldness, the open road, and the relentless pursuit of the good life.

Meet the Hays Travel team who have tried and tested the South of the USA!
Don’t just take our word for it, some of our team have saddled up, hit the road, and danced their way through the South themselves. From honky-tonks in Nashville to canyon winds in Arizona, here’s what happened when they swapped desks for dust trails, blues bars, and big American skies.

Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon
This is our Social Media Assistant Manager, Charlotte! And she's ready to share the top tricks and all the lesser-known things about the 'Mother Road'.
“With wheels of our own, Vegas flipped from glitter to grit. One moment we were chasing slot machines, the next, weaving through the sunburnt Grand Canyon and the Valley of Fire’s flame-hued spires. So still and so wild, creating playgrounds that made the Strip feel like a distant dream”

Memphis & Nashville
If the music, cowboy culture, and the King himself aren’t convincing enough to visit Memphis, New Orleans & Nashville, then here’s how Julie from our Killingworth branch found her trip:
“I was lucky enough to go on an educational trip to Memphis & Nashville with Newmarket Holidays, and what an amazing experience. My favourite moment was definitely Graceland, as every moment was wow-worthy from start to finish. However, every second of the trip was spectacular.”

Ranch Life, Arizona
Feel like the cowboy lifestyle is calling? Here is xxx from our xxx Hays Travel branch who lived and breathed it at the White Stallion Ranch in Arizona:
"From the moment we checked into White Stallion Ranch, it felt like walking into a Western movie, with dusty trails and wide skies. With 170–200 horses, you're matched with your own loyal steed for the ride of a lifetime. Archery, Shooting, cattle sorting, it’s all part of the magic, lovingly brought to life by the True family."
Feel like a trip to the Southern States is the one for you?
So, why visit the South of the USA? Because it’s not just a destination, it’s a feeling. A road-tripping, toe-tapping, story-soaked, starlit stretch of America that stays in your heart. Come for the music. Stay for the magic. And leave with enough tales to keep the campfire glowing for years.
