Why Visit Canada? Five Travel Myths Totally Busted!

01/09/2025

If you’ve ever dreamt of visiting Canada but got cold feet, this blog is just for you. This North American gem often tops bucket lists; and for good reason. But it also stirs up myths that can make even the most seasoned of travellers um-and-ah over their plans.

So, we’re busting those myths wide open and revealing why Canada is one of the world’s most awe-inspiring travel destinations. How do we know, you ask? We’ve been!

Myth #1: It’s always cold!
✅ Truth: It’s warmer than the UK in the summer months

Travellers are drawn to the snowy landscapes of the Canadian Rockies and British Columbia in the winter – especially if they’re into snow-based pursuits, hearty mountain cuisine, and the vibrant après ski scene. But Canada does enjoy four distinct seasons – Oh yes, the winters can be chilly, but the temperature gauge can hit 35°C in the summer in central and southern Canada; making it a prime time to explore lakes, national parks, and cities. Northern Canada experiences long, cold winters and short, cool summers.

Myth #2: It’s all about skiing!
✅ Truth: Yes, the skiing is wonderful, but you can enjoy so much more!

Of course, you can go skiing and snowboarding at Canada’s famous resorts like Whistler Blackcomb and Banff’s SkiBig3 - Lake Louise, Sunshine Village, and Mt Norquay. But don’t forget there’s everything from ice skating, snowshoeing, hiking, and kayaking to wildlife watching - bears, moose, polar bear, and whales - helicopter tours, sightseeing, wine tasting, and even shopping available across the country!

Myth #3: It’s all wilderness!
✅ Truth: Yes, Canada is home to the planet’s second largest wilderness area – but there’s so much vibrant city life to experience too!

No Canada holiday is complete without fitting in Toronto – from browsing at St Lawrence Market and exploring the Distillery District to gazing at the cityscapes from the CN Tower - and Niagara Falls are just a day trip away! Not forgetting Vancouver; where urban living and nature go hand in hand – from the diverse food culture of Gastown and thrilling walks over the rainforest and Capilano River at Capilano Suspension Bridge to the 360° views from Vancouver Lookout.

Myth #4: Everyone speaks French!
✅ Truth: French is one to Canada’s two official languages but it’s not the country’s universal language!

Only 22% of Canadians list French as their first language – the majority of the population speak English. French is commonly spoken in Quebec, while New Brunswick is bilingual. But don’t worry, road signs, food labels, and services are often in both languages across the country.

Myth #5: It’s expensive!
✅ Truth: Yes, the cost of living in Canada is expensive but you can still eat and drink well on a budget!

Budget $10 to $30 for breakfast, $15 to $35 for lunch, and $25 to $60 for your evening meal – depending on where you choose to dine. Canada offers many free attractions such as museums, parks, and events to make your money go further. And, of course, you don’t need to miss out on your morning Starbucks cappuccino at $5.55 CAD a cup or cooling down with a glass of domestic beer at $8 CAD a pop
