Meet Laura from our Cruise team, who recently embarked on her very first river cruise, and here's how she found her experience! I spent three unforgettable nights aboard Avalon Waterways’ Avalon View, sailing down the majestic Rhine River, which was part of the 7-night Romantic Rhine for Wine Lovers (Southbound) itinerary. During my time onboard, I discovered firsthand what sets Avalon Waterways apart and why river cruising has such a devoted following. Day 1- Amsterdam
My river cruise began in Amsterdam, where an Avalon Waterways representative greeted me and escorted me aboard the beautiful Avalon View. From the moment I stepped into my elegant Panorama Suite, complete with its Wall-to-Wall Window and Open-Air Balcony, I felt instantly at home. After lunch in the Panorama Bistro, paired perfectly with complimentary wine, our Cruise Director gave a friendly ship tour. That evening, we enjoyed a sparkling Captain’s Welcome Reception and a superb four-course dinner, before ending the night with live music in the Panorama Lounge.
Day 2 – Exploring Amsterdam & Setting Sail
After a delicious breakfast featuring Avalon Fresh® favourites, I joined my chosen Avalon Choice® excursion, a classic Amsterdam Canal Cruise. Gliding through the waterways, we admired the city’s charming gabled houses and fascinating history. Back onboard, I lunched in the Panorama Restaurant before relaxing in the cosy Club Lounge, sipping coffee as the ship set sail. Later, Happy Hour and the evening Port Talk offered a great chance to mingle and plan the next day. The night ended with a fun Introduction to Wine session hosted by the ship’s Master of Wine.
Day 3 – Breakfast in Bed & Cologne
I began the day with breakfast in bed, enjoying coffee and pastries beside my open balcony as the Avalon View sailed serenely down the Rhine. A late-morning Wine and Cheese Tasting proved both educational and indulgent before we docked right in the heart of Cologne. Our walking tour took us through cobbled streets to the breathtaking Cologne Cathedral, a true highlight. After a local beer stop, I returned for Happy Hour, dinner, and lively evening entertainment. Dancing and laughter filled the Panorama Lounge, rounding off another perfect day on the river.
Day 4 – Castles on the Rhine & Farewell
My final day began with breakfast in the Panorama Restaurant as we glided through the legendary Rhine Gorge, dotted with fairytale castles. From the Sky Deck, I listened to the Cruise Director’s fascinating commentary and soaked up the scenery before lunch onboard. That afternoon, I wandered through the charming streets of Rüdesheim, browsing local shops and savouring the relaxed pace. Back on the ship, afternoon tea and warm farewells from the crew brought my journey to a close, a fitting end to a voyage filled with beauty, comfort, and heartfelt hospitality.
