Spark the Noise
Spark the Noise is a charity, with a focus on social and gender justice in the music education sector. The organisation operates with the vision of a world where girls, women, transgender and non-binary people are powerful and can achieve their potential through music making and community building.
Spark the Noise received a grant from the Hays Travel Foundation to fund a one week music camp. The music camp hosted 22 girls, transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming young people aged 11-17 where they were given the opportunity to play an instrument and write and perform original music with support from trained staff and volunteers.
The aim of the programme was to increase confidence, musical skills as well as social connection for young people from under-represented genders and marginalised backgrounds. To help develop musical skills, participants were able to take part in daily band coaching, instrument tuition, and songwriting labs.
As a result of the project, participants have expressed feeling more confident, creative and felt a great sense of community and belonging. Participants have also reported being pleased with their musical ability and felt that they are able to express their feelings.
