Marine Society Sea Cadets
Marine Society Sea Cadets aims to promote the development of young people, helping them to achieve their physical, intellectual and social potential by providing skills and qualifications to prepare them for life. The organisation offers a unique combination of vocational and recreational that provide an active learning experience from those from all backgrounds, especially low income backgrounds.
Marine Society Sea Cadets received a grant from the Hays Travel Foundation to fund the Sea Cadet Bursary Scheme which provides financial aid to disadvantaged people from the North East. With the funding from the Hays Travel Foundation, 14 cadets were able to take part in maritime training voyages aboard Sea Cadets vessels such as TS Royalist and TS City of London.
One beneficiary got the chance to participate in The Tall Ships Races 2025, which is a prestigious international sailing event, designed to bring likeminded young people from around the world together. The competition features a series of races and cultural festivals across France, UK, Norway and Denmark. At the end of the competition, the beneficiary’s vessel finished in an incredible second place.
The bursary scheme has had a great impact on the lives of disadvantaged young people in the North East, as it has not only supported young people in accessing life-changing maritime experiences, and also ensures that financial barriers should not prevent participation.
