Downpatrick ASD Family Support Group
Downpatrick Autism Family Support Group was founded by two local parents to support families of children with autism in Downpatrick and surrounding areas. The organisation is committed to alleviating difficulties faced by parents of children with autism, and supporting the overall development of children living with autism.
Downpatrick Autism Family Support Group received funding from the Hays Travel Foundation to fund the 1:1 All Ability Swimming programme. The organisation has found that swimming is an extremely beneficial activity for children with autism as that it is a way of providing sensory regulation as swimming is a quitter and more controlled environment. In addition to providing sensory regulation, swimming also enhances physical fitness, and promotes strength and flexibility which overall benefits the wellbeing of the children.
Each session has a very personal approach, and children’s likes, dislikes and needs are all taken into account by the coaches to make the sessions run as smoothly as possible. The coaches offer their expertise, and use visual aids and supports to help with the processing of key points of swimming and water safety.
Downpatrick Autism Family Support Group continue to deliver the project due to the success it has already had and the benefits it brings to children living with autism.
