Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice was built with the vision to help families in the area who wanted an alternative to hospital, and in 2008 doors were opened to the first families who needed support. Since 2008, Bluebell Wood has supported hundreds of children from across areas such as South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire.
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice received a grant from the Hays Travel Foundation to fund music therapy sessions for children and young people with life-limiting conditions. Music is a powerful, emotional and creative tool that allows to alleviate pain, anxiety and depression as well as develop communication and build positive memories.
With the funding, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice has been able to deliver 128 music therapy sessions for 34 individual patients, which included one to one sessions and one off sessions for children staying at the hospice for a short break. In addition to music therapy sessions, Bluebell Wood also ran Wriggles & Rhymes sessions which are music therapy sessions however are ran in conjunction with a physiotherapist and focus on positioning and listening.
Both the music therapy and Wriggles & Rhymes sessions have been extremely beneficial, with one of the families stating that “We really enjoy the music group, Wriggles & Rhymes, and it’s great to feel part of a group with other families.”
