Atlas Theatre Company

Atlas Theatre Company CIC aims to promote broad engagement and participation in the creative arts for those in Sunderland and South Tyneside. Atlas Theatre Company CIC has the goal of increasing accessibility to the arts, especially for those from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Atlas Theatre Company CIC received a grant to support the Willows on the Wear project that celebrates classic literature and the natural beauty of the riverside in the North East. The project aims to adapt the classic story of ‘Wind in the Willows’ into two accessible and engaging plays; one for community performance, and one tailored for children to perform.

To help with script writing for Willows on the Wear, a series of activities have been completed around the Sunderland area. One research activity undertaken by Atlas Theatre Company was the River Wear Walk which allowed the community company to explore local spaces and enthuse the community about Sunderland’s landscape. The River Wear Walk allowed participants to follow the river, build enthusiasm and combat isolation as participants were able to form friendship and develop a support network.

Atlas Theatre Company CIC is continuing to develop the Willows on the Wear project, and the final script has been written, and work has begun to develop ideas and physical blocking. The project already has had a great impact on the local community, by building pride amongst participants, promoting wellbeing and providing opportunities to be involved in the arts.
