This four-night tour offers a great introduction to Iceland, an island of incredible natural phenomenon, which can be enjoyed all year round. If you visit in Summer you’ll have the chance to join an optional boat trip to see majestic whale pods; if you visit in Winter you’ll have the chance to relax in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon and join an included excursion in search of the magical Northern Lights. Whenever you choose to visit, you’re sure to encounter thousand-year-old glaciers, Europe’s mightiest waterfalls and still-simmering volcanoes.
Day 1: UK-Reykjavik
Fly to Reykjavik and transfer to the locally rated 4-star Foss Hotel.
Your base for the next four nights, the 320-room hotel has a central location, just a short walk from the main shopping area in Reykjavik’s business district. Facilities at the hotel include free Wi-Fi, a buffet-style restaurant, gym, lounge and a beer garden, where you can treat yourself to Icelandic brewed beers. All bedrooms include a television and safety deposit box.
Dinner is included at the hotel this evening. D
Day 2: Tour the Golden Circle
Set off on a full-day tour of the Golden Circle where you’ll see some of Iceland’s incredible natural scenery. This classic Golden Circle tour includes a visit to the spectacular ‘Golden Waterfall’ of Gullfoss, which plunges over 96 feet into a deep gorge of foaming water below.
You’ll also venture into the beautiful Thingvellir National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – surrounded by mountains and home to a vast lava plain of green moss and wild flowers. It is regarded by the Icelanders as a sacred place, for the world’s oldest legislative parliament, the Althing, first convened here in 930AD.
At the Geysir hot spring area you will be able to see hissing springs and other geothermal phenomena, before visiting the serene Kerid crater lake in the centre of the Kerid volcano. B
Day 3: Reykjavik
Today you have the choice of spending the day at leisure, when you may like to explore more of Reykjavik independently, or you can join an optional half-day excursion. If your holiday departs between April and September you can set off on a whale watching safari to see these magnificent creatures in their natural environment.
Alternatively, if your holiday departs between October and March you’ll have the chance to relax and rejuvenate in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, which has a scenic setting in a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula; plus, you can also look forward to an included excursion that takes you in search of the mysterious Northern Lights. B
Day 4: South Coast Tour
Look forward to an included full-day tour of Iceland’s spectacular southern coast, home to beautiful waterfalls, ancient glaciers, numerous ice caves and a serene glacial lagoon. A highlight of your tour is sure to be a visit to the beach of Reynisfjara where striking black sand sits at the foot of unusual towering basalt columns. B, D
