Belonging to the Aegean islands, Lesbos is the third largest Greek Island. On the southern coast of Lesbos is Plomari, the ouzo capital of Greece. Plomari is home to several ouzo factories and the Barbayiannis Ouzo Museum. Set on the west of Lesbos is the small fishing village of Sigri, with its charming harbour, colourful fishing boats and traditional tavernas. No holiday on island of Lesbos is complete without a visit to the island's capital - Mytilini is a busy coastal city built around an old harbour, with a maze of cobbled streets, bustling markets, traditional cafes, and interesting museums. The old part of the city contrasts with the modern town with its busy shopping centres and hotels and is also home to the Byzantine Mytilini Castle. This island has everything from luxury hotel complexes to small family-run establishments, simple B&Bs, apartments, studios and basic campsites. Lesbos enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate of long hot summers and mild winters. Lesbos is also known to be one of the sunniest islands in all of the Aegean. The average temperature on the island sits at a comfortable 18°C. Summer begins during May and carries on right through until October. In the peak of summer during July and August, the temperatures can peak at 35°C to 40°C. Winters in Lesbos don’t get particularly cold, especially on the coast. As you head up the mountains temperatures drop and snow often falls. The average temperature throughout December is 12°C, falling to 10°C in January and February. Winter is the island’s rainy season, with rainfall at its peak in December.
Things to see & do

The wonderful beaches are the main focus of holidays on Lesbos, but there are lots of other things to experience too. Try your hand at a range of water sports, such as parasailing and the everpopular windsurfing. Explore the islands wonderful landscapes by donkey or horseback, bike, jeep or on foot. The best way to see the coast and giant bays of Lesbos is on a sailboat. Visit the Petrified Forest of Lesbos which is located in the western part of the island.

The nightlife on Lesbos is more lowkey than the more popular islands. In the capital you'll find bars, discos and night clubs for a lively night out. For a peaceful restaurant meal, choose one of the many tavernas in the coastal resorts where you can have a beautiful view of the sea while you eat.There are one or two cinemas if you fancy a film and you might be lucky enough to experience one of the local traditional festivals during your stay.

There are a wide selection of restaurants to choose from on Lesbos, serving everything from traditional greek food plus international choices and fast food including souvlaki, pizzas and hamburgers. Locallycaught fish and seafood are reasonably priced and feature on many menus. Start your meal with a mezze of appetisers including taramosalata, tzatziki and dolmades and follow with traditional Greek favourites of mousakka or calamari with baklava for dessert. Be sure to try the islands own ouzo the strong, aniseedflavoured local liqueur.
