Located along the banks of the River Ilm, the city of Weimar is packed with lots of things to see and experience, making it an ideal destination for a city break. Weimar’s Marktplatz is the heart of the city and a great starting place from which to explore – from the Stadthaus and Cranachhaus to the Rathaus and famous Elephant Hotel. Weimar’s cultural history comes to life at the former homes and museums dedicated to the writers Goethe and Schiller, who are both commemorated in a statue in Theatreplatz. The Duchess of Anna Amalia Library, the Liszt Museum, the Bauhaus Museum, Schloss Palace and Jacobskirche are well worth a visit too. The pedestrianised Schillerstrasse and Wielandstrasse are shopping delights with antique bookshops, designer boutiques and souvenir shops to explore. Relax with a stroll in the riverside Park an de Ilm full of trees, pathways, ancient ruins and also Goethe’s Gartenhaus. A concert at the School of Music is a lovely way to spend the evening. Winter weather sets the festive scene for the Weimar Christmas Market. All of this is just a two hour flight from the UK, making holidays to Weimar perfect for short breaks and long weekends.

Things To Do

You'll be spoilt for choice of things to see and do during a holiday in Weimar. Discover a wealth of cultural attractions on a bike trip along the Ilm Valley Cycle Route. Enjoy a walk along the 28km Goethe Walking Trail that takes you through the countryside from Weimar to Grosskochberg Castle. For water-based fun and relaxation, discover the indoor and outdoor Schwanseebad Pools and also the Avenida and Toscana Thermal Spas. Golfers have a choice of three courses to play a round. Visit the Buchenwald Concentration Camp & Memorial, home to exhibitions and memorial sites to the atrocities of World War II. The Onion Market Festival in October is a unique experience with stalls, beer gardens and live music across the city.

Weimar boasts an eclectic mix of nightlife – from bustling pubs and bars to nightclubs, dance clubs and live music venues, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Deutsches National Theatre has a full calendar of events and concerts.
