We decided that this year we wanted to do something as a branch that would really challenge us, something totally out of character and that would shock our friends and family. We found it - The Ultimate Sky Walk in Honister Pass, Lake District. - A wire bridge suspended 2000 feet above the valley floor.
We have a local Charity that we support at the Consett Branch, Willowburn Hospice. The hospice is vital in our community providing quality end of life care and family support when they need it most. We decided to sign up for the walk in November and raise funds throughout the winter until the walk itself in April 2018. We did this by in branch advertising and Facebook. Everyone really couldn't believe what we had signed up for!
On the day of the walk we were all relatively calm until we approached the Honister Pass itself and could see how high it was. It was a dull, rainy day which made matters worse. Once we stepped out one by one onto the wire with just a harness holding us up, the fear well and truly sunk in. The bridge would swing and tip giving us full view of the valley floor 2000 feet below us. It took over an hour to walk step by step across the thin wire and we were all exhausted but exhilarated at the end. It was such an achievement and whats more we raised money for such a worthy cause.
To round off the year, we also raised £1,380 for Willowburn Hospice from our Christmas coach trip to York markets! We would like to thank everyone for their generous donations and we look forward to more fundraising next year.
