Full Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Auckland
On arrival into Auckland International Airport, you will pick up your hire car and then make your way to The Quadrant Hotel Auckland, where you will spend the next two nights. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Auckland is New Zealand’s most populous city and is a multi-cultural hub of food, music, arts, and culture, so head out and explore.

Day 2: Auckland
Today, discover Auckland's key attractions with your Hop-On, Hop-Off Explorer bus pass. This is a convenient and easy way to see the city’s sights, and the bus ride includes full commentary. The all-day pass allows you to get on and off as you please at whatever stops interest you most. Attractions include SkyCity, Auckland Museum, Auckland waterfront, and more.

Day 3: Auckland – Rotorua
Check out of your hotel this morning and load up the car for your drive to Rotorua. En route you may wish to visit the Waitomo Caves (own expense), an underground cave, spectacularly lit by thousands of tiny glow worms. Continue your journey to the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua and upon arrival, check into Distinction Rotorua Hotel for a two-night stay. After check in, you may wish to explore the area’s shooting geysers and bubbling mud pools, or perhaps visit a living M?ori village for an insight into their culture (own expense).

Day 4: Hobbiton
Today, you will be collected from your hotel and driven across the Kaimai Ranges to The Shires Rest Café. This is the starting point to experience the real Middle-Earth with a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set; the bucolic setting for The Shire that featured in The Lord of the Rings and the 'Hobbit' Trilogies. Drive through the picturesque 1,250 acre sheep farm with spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges. Your guide will escort you through the site, recounting fascinating details of how the Hobbiton set was created. The Hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn, Mill, and other structures created for the films can be viewed, and you will see how this beautiful piece of Waikato farmland was transformed into The Shire from Middle-Earth. You will then be transferred back to your hotel in Rotorua and have the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 5: Rotorua – Wellington
This morning, check out of your Rotorua hotel and depart for Wellington, travelling along the Thermal Explorer Highway to Lake Taupo and the thundering Huka Falls. Continue on to Wellington and upon arrival, check into Distinction Wellington Century City Hotel for two nights. The rest of the evening is at leisure to explore the city – known as ‘the coolest little capital in the world’.

Day 6: Wellington
Today, you will enjoy a morning city tour, joining a small group to explore Wellington’s most unique sights. Drive through Courtenay Place and Oriental Parade, and head up Mt Victoria for spectacular views of the city and harbour. Then, travel the stunning, rugged coastline, now a marine reserve, stopping along the way to taste some famous Wellington coffee. Return to the central city for a drive through the quirky Cuba Street district and along Lambton Quay, the main shopping street, for a chance to ride the famous Wellington Cable Car. The tour ends with stops at Parliament and Old St Paul’s Cathedral, then you have the rest of the afternoon free to further explore at your leisure.

Day 7: Wellington – Marlborough (including Interislander Ferry)
Check out of your hotel this morning and make your way to the Wellington Ferry Terminal to board the Interislander Ferry for your journey across the Cook Strait to Picton. This 92km journey is considered one of the most scenic ferry crossings in the world and is one of New Zealand’s most iconic tourist experiences. From Picton Ferry Terminal, you have a short drive to take you to your next hotel - Chateau Marlborough, where you will spend one night.

Day 8: Marlborough – Kaikoura
Today, drive onwards to Kaikoura. This picturesque coastal town is the perfect place for marine life encounters, coastal walks, and tucking into a plate of crayfish. As whales, fur seals, and dolphins live permanently in the coastal waters here, it is a great place to book a boat trip. You will spend one night here at White Morph Motor Inn.

Day 9: Kaikoura – Christchurch
Continue your journey down the coast to Christchurch. Upon arrival you will check into Rendezvous Hotel Christchurch for a two-night stay. Spend the rest of the day exploring Christchurch’s colourful streets. After the devastating earthquakes in 2010/2011, Christchurch was rebuilt as a more creative and funky urban centre. Wander through the streets admiring the colourful murals that tell stories of the city's resilience and strong spirit.

Day 10: Christchurch
Today you will have a half-day city tour through the sights of Christchurch. You will be collected from your accommodation and driven to the city centre, where the tour starts by discussing the impact of the 2010/2011 earthquakes and assessing the progress of the rebuilding efforts. Other places of interest visited during the tour include the beautiful Botanic Gardens, the river precinct, the Transitional Cathedral (Cardboard Cathedral), and the Tannery shopping precinct. If time permits, the tour will head to the Port Hills which overlook Christchurch and present stunning views of the city, Canterbury Plains, Lyttelton Harbour, and the distant Southern Alps. After being dropped back at your accommodation you have the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 11: Christchurch – Mount Cook
Today’s drive will take you to the village of Mount Cook, which sits at the foot of New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki/Mount Cook. Your accommodation for tonight is The Hermitage Hotel and it is perfectly located for exploring the stunning scenery of the surrounding national park. There are various walking trails you may choose to explore this afternoon.

Day 12: Mount Cook – Queenstown
Your final two nights in New Zealand will be spent in the country’s adventure capital – Queenstown. Surrounded by towering mountains and positioned on the edge of a lake, Queenstown is a hub of adventure activities, from bungee jumping and canyon swinging to jet boating and river rafting. Upon arrival, check into Crowne Plaza Queenstown, then head out and explore.

Day 13: Queenstown & Milford Sound
Your day starts early with a 6.45am pick-up for a full-day coach and cruise tour. Admire the magnificent mountain range known as the Remarkables as you journey out of Queenstown. You'll stop for morning tea in the picturesque lakeside town of Te Anau, the gateway to the Fiordland National Park, before your journey continues along the Milford Road into Fiordland. With the glass-roofed coach you'll be able to gaze up at the amazing rocky mountains above. Even more incredible scenery awaits before you finally descend through the Cleddau Valley into Milford Sound.
Board a small, boutique boat for your Milford Sound cruise and view the stunning snow-tipped mountains that surround you. Cruise past rugged cliffs that are covered in magnificent native rainforest, with powerful waterfalls that tumble hundreds of metres down into the fiord. Keep a look out for seals, dolphins, and penguins in the waters below. After your Milford Sound cruise, board your coach for the return journey to Queenstown, arriving back in the early evening.

Day 14: Depart New Zealand
Today, it’s time to bid farewell to New Zealand. Check out of your hotel and drive to Queenstown Airport, where you will return your hire car and begin your journey back to the UK.
