Louis Matthews - Barbados Educational

Louis Matthews

Louis is a Personal Travel Consultant and in June 2019 had the chance to go on an unforgettable educational trip to Barbados. Here’s what he got up to whilst there…

I got the unbelievable opportunity to be part of an educational trip to the beautiful island of Barbados. The FAM trip was to mark 65 years of British Airways flying to the island and was hosted by the Barbados Tourism Board. To start my journey I was thrilled to be upgraded to business class with British airways where I enjoyed the perks on board including a 4 course meal, afternoon tea, unlimited drink selection and of course the famous flat bed. It was incredible!

On arrival to Barbados, I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to stay at The Sands Barbados; a brand new hotel with a relaxed Ibiza vibe and a very stylish finish. I was given one of the amazing duplex rooms, which even came with a lovely beach view. The welcome to the hotel was fantastic; all of the staff were very friendly and continued to be throughout my stay.

During the trip the group did many activities including: a fantastic afternoon catamaran trip (Cool Runnings 1) to see the turtles, a Bajan bus experience , a 5k bike ride, island jeep safari and we even visited the famous Harrison’s Cave Barbados. I would highly recommend all of the excursions, they were the highlights of the trip.

For most days, the weather was around 30 degrees and in the evening it was fairly humid so remember to pack your sun cream and light clothes!

We also visited St Lawrence Gap where you have a fantastic range of restaurants and bars. One evening we went to Primo restaurant where the food was fantastic and I would highly recommend going to this restaurant while visiting this place. The highlight was the fantastic ambience in the room and it was lovely to see the tropical fish and turtles swim by as you were enjoying your meal.

I visited a range of hotels during my stay from beach hotels to luxury apartments. My favourite accommodations included Sea Breeze Hotel, The Sands Barbados, Sweetfield Manor Boutique Hotel, Sandals Royal Barbados and Mango Bay Hotel.

I gained so much knowledge and learnt a lot about Barbados on this trip and I can’t wait to visit the island again in the future.
