Why Book...
  • This seven-night tour gives you a taste of Ancient Greece, from the original site of the Olympic Games to the country’s first capital city
  • You’ll visit some of the islands as well as the mainland

DAY 1: UK to Kefalonia

Today you will fly from the UK to reach the biggest of the Greek Ionian islands - Kefalonia. On arrival at the airport, you will collect your bags and hop on a transfer to your first hotel in the town of Argostoli. Take your time to settle in, unpack, and then perhaps venture out of the grounds to explore the town a little.

DAY 2: Set sail to Homer's Ithaca

Set sail to the rugged island rooted in legend today - Ithaca. You'll pause at the capital Vathi, where you can relax on the stunning shoreline. There's also the chance to check out the horseshoe-shaped harbour and discover many exhibitions at the Archaeological Museum. Vathi Cathedral is also a great spot to experience a feel for the local area. Later, take a short boat ride from Vathi to Kiona where there'll be plenty of time to cool off in the sea before taking a tour of the town's flower-decked streets.

DAY 3: Off to Olympia

Enjoy a ferry ride today over to mainland Greece to visit Olympia. Olympia was the first city to host the Olympic Games; here you'll be able to learn the history of this. Tour the ancient sites with a knowledgeable guide and find out about the fascinating history of the original Olympic Games as you wander amongst the impressive remains of the Gymnasium and the famous Temples of Hera and Zeus. Take a moment to see what's home to the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, including ancient Greek sculptures and a mesmerising bronze collection. Into the afternoon and evening, you'll have plenty of leisure time to roam as you please.

DAY 4: Go west to Nafplion

Early this morning, you'll take a transfer to reach the charming seaside town of Nafplion which is known as the first capital of Greece. After a delicious lunch, you'll be given time to tour the town and its castle. In order to reach Palamidi Castle you'll have to hike up 999 steps but you'll quickly discover that the views are worth it. Take in panoramic vistas of Nafplio and the ocean beneath you. This evening, you'll be able to explore independently.

DAY 5: Ancient Epidaurus & Mycenae

Today you'll be able to tick off two of history's biggest names - Epidaurus and Mycenae. Your first stop will be the crumbled city of Epidaurus, which is home to a huge open-air amphitheatre. Dating back to the 4th century, learn how it's still used for many festivals to date. Afterwards, there's the chance to visit the ancient ruined city of Mycenae. Be sure to take plenty of photos of the city and its remains of huge stone structures and walls, as well as royal grave sites.

DAY 6: Return to Kefalonia

The ferry back to Kefalonia awaits you today. When you arrive back on the island, you will then transfer back to your hotel in Argostoli. Afterwards, the afternoon is free to do what you like. Perhaps take a walk to Lithostroto pedestrian mall street where you can shop for souvenirs and find a collection of inviting coffee shops. There's also the orthodox church of St Spiridonas, the church of St Nicolas, and the Clock Tower in Kambana Square.

DAY 7: Wine and sightseeing in the Ainos National Park

There's a lot on the agenda today. Enjoy a visit to Ainos National Park, wine tasting, and a monastery at the top of a mountain. Firstly, take time to really admire the dramatic landscapes of the park and notice the Greek firs and black pines, as well as the island's only mountain. Following your time here, head to Robola Winery to sample a number of delicious local wines; there's even the chance to take a few bottles home. Next comes a visit to the sacred St Gerasimos Monastery where you can gaze in awe at the stunning artwork, rainbow-tinted glass, and golden furniture. In the evening, you can make the most of free time to chill out in Sami. Perhaps wander the pretty harbour and shop for unique artwork.

DAY 8: Fly Home

Today marks the day you will say goodbye to Kefalonia as you make your return flight home. Alternatively, if you wish to stay longer you can extend your holiday in a beachfront hotel with our Multi-Destination programme.
