Things to see & do

Mention city breaks in Venice and youll instantly conjure up images of the Grand Canal, With its gondolas and glittering Renaissance palaces, its certainly a spectacular sight, but theres far more to discover in this watery city. Explore old churches, new art galleries and lavish palaces. For aweinspiring views of Venice, head to top of the Campanile di San Marco. If you fancy a change of scenery, take an excursion to the pretty island of Burano, where the rainbowcoloured houses and peaceful atmosphere make a charming retreat.

Unlike other European city breaks, Venice holidays arent renowned for their buzzing nightlife. Still, when the sun sets on Venice, the city springs into life. You wont find dance clubs and discos here (fans of those tend to head out to the nearby Lido) but you will discover some beautiful places to eat, drink and relax. Begin an evening with a theatre performance or music concert, before enjoying a taste of nightlife, Venetian style. Slip down a narrow alley and into one of the traditional wine bars, where the vino spritzes are cool and the welcome warm. For a tourist hotspot with great peoplewatching potential, pull up a chair at one of Piazza San Marcos many cafs. If youre looking for stunning views of the city, head to one of the waterfront hotels; several of them have rooftop bars with perfect panoramas.

Food & drink

It should come as no surprise that dining out is a real treat on Venice holidays. Youll be spoilt for choice with a huge range of restaurants, serving up pizza, pasta, seafood, gelato and wine. Try a trattoria for less formal dining, or enjoy a morning coffee in one of the citys pavement cafs.
