Our Ryde branch is helping to bring a local carnival group back together after funding for its meeting venue was withdrawn last year!
The Ryde-based VIVA Carnival Club was left with no place to hold its dance, music, crafts, and costume-making workshops when local council funding for its building was stopped – so our Ryde branch got involved! VIVA Carnival Club, which formed in 2012, brings disabled and non-disabled adults together to engage in various carnival activities. These include dancing and creating costumes that are paraded in local carnivals.
Alexis Ryde Branch Manager is a long-time volunteer and active co-chair for VIVA Carnival Club. She teaches weekly classes, helps supervise events, assists costume-making sessions, and helps with organisation and fund-raising.
The Isle of Wight hosts more than 6 winter and 18 summer parades each year and the Ryde team know how important participation in carnival events means to people on the Island and Alexis has seen how it can really help those with disabilities build confidence and self-esteem.
