Beaches, relaxation, sunshine, peace and quiet are what make holidays in Porto Santo a popular choice. Located approximately 50kms north east of Funchal, the tiny island of Porto Santo's barren landscape contrasts greatly with the lush green hills of neighbouring Madeira. The northern coastline is lined with cliffs and pebbly coves while the east coast is home to a 9km stretch of sand. Growing only palms, vines and very little else, the glory of a Porto Santo holiday lies in its beaches and laid back life style. Vila Baleira, Porto Santo’s only town, is lined with whitewashed villas, neat town squares and pavement cafes. So, if you're looking for total relaxation by both day and night, then a holiday in Porto Santo is the perfect choice for you.
Relaxation is the key to holidays on Porto Santo. The beaches are a popular choice in the daytime with a selection of watersports available. The island boasts a large golf course comprising two eighteen hole and one nine hole courses. A good way to explore the island is by taking the fairly inexpensive minibus tour.
Nightlife on Porto Santo is very quiet. Hotels provide inhouse entertainment and there are a surprising number of restaurants providing relaxing venues for your evening meal. Vila Baleira, the tiny capital, has a number of bars with local flavour.
As you would expect of an island in the Atlantic, Porto Santo cuisine relies heavily on fish. Simply prepared produce straight from the sea is hard to beat. La Roca is considered to be one of the best restaurants on the island while Mare Sol, on the water front, offers very good value.
