Mexico

With stunning coastlines in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Mexico is an amazing place to take a beach holiday. But there's much more to this colourful country than hammocks, white sands and cocktails. Mixing fascinating ancient history, sophisticated cities, lush jungles and purpose built resorts, there's a holiday in Mexico to suit just about everyone. Nightlife is sorted in popular Cancun, with its world-class nightclubs and bars, not forgetting days spent on its beaches or snorkelling and diving in search of underwater wildlife. Riviera Maya on the Mexican coastline boasts pristine, uncrowded beaches bathed by warm seas together with historic Mayan ruins, nature reserves and marinas brimming with watersports facilities. Playa del Carmen on the Mayan Riviera is one of the most attractive destinations in the Mexican Caribbean – stunning beaches, blue seas and the second largest coral reef to explore. Cozumel Island sitting in the Yucatan Channel is full of marine parks, jungle trails and snow-white sands. With so much to see and experience in one country, it's no wonder a holiday in Mexico is a popular choice with British holidaymakers.

Kicking back and relaxing on the beach is what a holiday in Mexico is all about. For the more active, there's water-based activities including scuba diving, snorkelling or big game fishing for barracuda and tuna to experience. Visit the turtle farm at Isla Mujeres. Step back in time and explore the ancient Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza, its most famous being the Kukulcan Pyramid. Enjoy the stalactite and stalagmite-filled caves of Aktun Chen. Experience the relaxing natural wonders at Xel-Ha from a hammock or for the more active enjoy snorkelling in the lazy river, cliff jumping, rope swinging and jungle trekking. Xcaret, a Mayan-themed park with spellbinding show and pageants and charming Vallaloid, with it lovely plaza, churches and traditional Mayan flavour, are also worth a visit. Top of your shopping list should be some Mexican silver and local handicrafts such as glassware and pottery.
Food & Drink
Due to its international population, Cancun and the larger resorts have restaurants offering French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican and American cuisine. Typical Mexican fare includes burritos (stuffed and rolled tortillas), empanadas (stuffed pastries) and quesadillas (tortillas with cheese). For meat-lovers there’s albondigas (meatballs in broth) and carne asada (grilled meat). Fish specialities include ceviche (raw fish marinated in lemon) and pescado a la veracruzana (fish in a spicy tomato sauce). To accompany your meal, sample the national drink Tequila, best enjoyed on its own or in a Margarita.
In The Evening
Mexico comes alive after dark. Downtown Cancun offers a vibrant nightlife including the infamous Coco Bongo’s nightclub with its live acts including acrobats, impersonators and DJ’s. Playa del Carmen offers a mix of live music bars and clubs catering for all tastes from Jazz to Salsa.
