Things To Do
Egypt's Red Sea coast has some of the best beaches in the world, meaning there are plenty of water sports and boat trips on offer. Don't miss a chance to snorkel on the stunning coral reefs, or enrol at a PADI school and learn to dive. Active visitors can enjoy desert quad biking, horse riding, golf, and hiking. Many hotels have their own on-site water parks – popular with families and younger guests. Haggle for bargains in the colourful bazaars, or pick up bargains in souvenir shops. No Egypt holiday would be complete without seeing the Sphinx and the Pyramids of Giza and it is possible to take a longer excursion to Cairo from the Red Sea resorts. Luxor is packed with fascinating attractions including Egyptology museums and the Karnak Temple.
Food & Drink
Many hotels in Egypt's coastal resorts are all inclusive and serve up a good mix of international buffet food as well as local specialities. In larger resorts, you'll find restaurants serving up food from all over the world – as well as the odd fast food joint. Don't miss a chance to sample the local, flavoursome cuisine. Although Egypt is a Muslim country, alcohol is available in cafe-style bars, hotels and many restaurants in larger towns, cities and resorts. A favourite Egyptian pastime is wiling away the hours in a coffee-house (ahwa) over a game of backgammon and a sheesha - waterpipe. Tea is served in glasses and comes dark and impossibly sweet; the same is true with coffee, which is taken in the Turkish style.
In The Evening
Most of the entertainment in Red Sea Riviera hotels tends to be hotel-based and includes dazzling belly-dancing shows and live Egyptian music. Sharm el Sheikh is the place to head for buzzing nightlife: Naama Bay is a pedestrianised area packed with bars and discos, including famous names like Pacha and Hard Rock Café. Sophisticated nightclubs, bars and restaurants can be found in Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria and most large towns.
