Things To Do
There's plenty to see and do in and around Malaga whether you're into history, nature, art, sport, or just great food! The city has extensive sports facilities, numerous concerts and cultural events, bullfights, a theatre (where Banderas once trod the boards!) and a cinema. The city’s streets are full of beautiful old buildings dating back centuries - one of the main attractions being the Picasso Museum where you can see paintings and drawings dating back to the late 19th Century when Picasso was just a teenager. The Moorish fortress of Alcazaba is a major landmark with its solid fortified walls dating back to the 700’s when the Arabs first conquered this region of Spain. The 14th century Gibrafaro Castle overlooking the city is also worth a visit. Enjoy one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Europe, Finca La Concepcion, with its wide variety of exotic flowers and ornamental pools filled with water lilies, frogs and turtles. The shops range from designer boutiques to traditional Spanish outlets. There are also more than 20 international top range golf courses within an hour’s drive of the city.
Food & Drink
Malaga is a great place to eat out and the bars and restaurants are where the real social life of the city takes place. International cuisine including Italian, Hindi, Chinese, English and French restaurants rub shoulders with eateries serving regional fare. Tapas are an Andalusian tradition and a wonderfully inexpensive way to try a variety of local food. Malaga is also famous for its "pescaito frito", a selection of small fried fish such as sardines and red mullet, best washed down with a glass of ice cold fino sherry. Head to the east of city to El Palo, a typical fisherman's village, to enjoy the "catch of the day”. Local wines are also widely available and of course the traditional Sangria.
In The Evening
Malaga has a thriving nightlife all year round - you'll find everything from traditional gypsy flamenco performances and hospitable back street tapas bars to modern nightclubs. In the historic centre of Malaga, the streets and squares buzz with authentic bars, outdoor terraces and good live music. Malaga’s warm evenings are also were made for ’sundowners’ – a drink to be enjoyed at sunset on a terrace, maybe accompanied by some of Malaga’s famous cakes.
