For the more active, there's a choice of golf courses in the area, with an 18-hole course at Palheiro and a 27-hole course at Santo de Serro. There's also a number of water sporting activities available on the beach. Additional activities, shops, bars and restaurants are on offer at nearby Funchal.

Although there are a number of good places to eat in Canico, many of the restaurants are hotel based. Fish and seafood play an important role in the island's cuisine, with many menus featuring the catch of the day. Enjoy a glass of locally-brewed Madeira wine.

Nightlife in Canico is fairly low-key and much of the entertainment is hotel based. Those wishing for a livelier time can take the short journey to Funchal by local bus or taxi.
