Sri Lanka

Nicknamed the “Teardrop of India”, the island of Sri Lanka is lined with golden, deserted beaches, stunning vistas, abundant wildlife and heritage sites galore. The beaches are the main focus of holidays in Sri Lanka, especially when it comes to relaxation, but don’t forget to explore inland where you’ll find jungles, lakes, safari country and tea plantations. With no less than 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sights on the island, including the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the sacred city of Kandy, the Golden Temple of Dambulla and the Sinharajah Forest Reserve, you’ll need more than one trip to visit them all! Bentota is Sri Lanka’s most popular beach resort, whereas Galle to the south of the West coast is worth the long transfer time for its stunning coastline, old town and heritage sites. Yala National Park offers a unique experience of viewing game such as wild elephant, leopard and crown bear beside the coast. Colombo, the island’s capital, is the best place to shop with its many department stores and shopping outlets while Kandy is the perfect place for silver and gems. A holiday in Sri Lanka has got it all - why not discover the wonders of Sri Lanka yourself this year?

Things To Do
It’s easy to spend your days on a deserted beach relaxing, but there’s so much more to fill your days on a holiday in Sri Lanka. Hikkaduwa on the island’s south west coast is the popular spot for surfing. Visit a tea plantation and see how the famous Ceylon tea is made. Take a ride on a train – Sri Lanka’s trains are slow and like a step back in time, but they really are the best way to enjoy the landscape. Visit Yala National Park or Udawalawe National Park to get close to the wildlife. Visit the site of prilgrimage for many Adam’s Peak, the island’s highest mountain. Go hiking through the rainforests and cloudforests of the island’s interior. Catch a cricket match, the locals are mad about cricket and play in the street and on the beach. Visit Pigeon Island with 300 types of fish and 100 species of coral.
Food & Drink
Seafood is excellent in Sri Lanka especially when it’s served barbequed on the beach. If you like your curries hot and spicy, you won’t be disappointed. Chinese, Continental, Indian and Japanese menus are available in Colombo and all the hotels and resorts. Arrack, the local drink made from coconuts, is either served on its own or in a refreshing cocktail.
In The Evening
Outside of Colombo, nightlife is usually hotel-based. Some Colombo hotels have supper clubs with music for dancing. There are also theatres in Colombo together with cinemas showing films from the USA, ballet, concerts and theatre productions.
