Lying at the foot of the Sierra de Gador Mountains, to the west of the Costa Almeria, is the resort of Roquetas de Mar. Once a traditional fishing village, Roquetas de Mar has developed into a modern holiday resort with hotels, shops, bars and restaurants. Holidays in Roquetas de Mar centre around its wide, clean sandy shingle beaches with water sports such as windsurfing and jet skiing on offer. With family-friendly amenities such as a water park, children’s play area and crazy golf, it’s easy to see why Roquetas de Mar is a popular choice for families. The promenade bordering the beach has many shady palm trees as well as a large number of bars and restaurants. In the evening enjoy a quiet drink by the port whilst watching the fishermen land their catch. The old town retains its Moorish charm, with its whitewashed houses and narrow alleyways, and has many historical sites to explore including the old Moorish Santa Ana fortress and the Church of Nuestra Senora del Rosiana. For nauture enthusiasts, the salt lagoons at Las Marinas 4kms south of the resort are the best place to spot flamingos. The Costa Almeria’s healthy climate of lots of sunshine and very little rain makes for an all-year round holiday destination - and with only a 2.5 hour flight to Roquetas de Mar from the UK, it's all closer than you think.
