Gran Canaria

Holidays in Gran Canaria pretty much guarantee sunshine, whatever the time of year. The second largest of the Canary Islands is home to sandy beaches, bustling resorts, great shopping and plenty of entertainment. Party animals flock to Playa del Ingles for its neon-lit nightclubs and busy bars. Just along the coast, Maspalomas is a little lower key, with a magnificent sand dune backdrop. In sophisticated Puerto Mogan, whitewashed houses lace minaiture canals that lead to the harbour. Lively Puerto Rico is a popular choice for families and groups of friends, who love the horseshoe bay, hillside setting and water park. The north of the island is unspoilt, with forests, waterfalls and pretty Canarian Villages.

In the purpose-built resorts of the south, handy entertainment centres house all the shops, bars and restaurants you could wish for in one convenient place. Choose from great value all-inclusive hotels, luxury spa retreats and affordable self-catering apartments for your stay in Gran Canaria; there's a resort and an accommodation type to suit just about everyone.

Things To Do
As you'd expect from a holiday island in the sun, Gran Canaria boasts water sports and boat trips galore, but there's plenty going on on dry land too. Explore the mountainous terrain on a hiking trip, or play a round of golf on one of the island's eight courses. Don't miss a camel trip through the breathtaking Maspalomas Dunes; you'll feel like you're in the Sahara.

Great family days out include Aqua Sur Waterpark with its many pools and chutes, Crocodile Park zoo and Palmitos Park, home to exotic birds, fish and cacti. For retail therapy, head to the department stores and boutiques of capital Las Palmas, or pick up a bargain at a Sunday morning market. Holidays in Gran Canaria are about more than just sunbathing!
Food & Drink
Restaurants and cafés on Gran Canaria cater for most tastes. You’ll find typical Canarian cuisine and fish restaurants alongside Italian, Chinese and British fare. Try the locally produced wines and sangria, or sample the famous Arucas rum. All inclusive hotels offer good value-for-money with food and drink thrown in and larger resorts have the fast food chains you'd expect.
In The Evening
Gran Canaria's wide range of resorts mean that there's a type of evening entertainment to suit every visitor. The entertainment complexes in the more developed resorts put bars, restaurants and clubs in one place. Playa del Ingles is a must for party-animals in search non-stop parties and busy bars, many of which proudly display the rainbow flag.

For trendy nightspots, jazz bars and casinos head for Maspalomas. Puerto Rico is a family favourite, but its happy hour bars and discos attract groups of friends, especially in the summer months. In the capital Las Palmas, experience tapas cafés and salsa clubs. Many family-friendly hotels offer on-site entertainment with little ones in mind. For true relaxation, spend evenings simply sitting on your balcony and taking in the beautiful island sunsets.
