Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata, on the Domincan Republic’s North Coast, was one of the first tourist beach resorts created on the island and remains one of the most popular. Set along a 2km stretch of sand, the resort is full of affordable beachfront hotels and is also one of the world’s best windsurfing spots. With 300 sun-filled days each year and temperatures averaging between 25 – 30 °C all year round it’s no wonder Puerto Plata is such a hit with families, single travellers, couples and groups of friends.

Things To Do
Daytime in Puerto Plata is all about the beach and enjoying the many watersports on offer. Take a scuba-diving or snorkelling trip to the nearby resort of Sousa where you’ll find reefs, canyons and shipwrecks to explore. Play golf on one of the many courses around the resort. Try your hand at deep-sea fishing with Blue Marlin, White Marlin and Mahi Mahi available in the local waters. Take a cable car ride to the top of Mount Isabel for the best views. Visit a rum distillery to find out about and sample the local drink. Get close to the local birdlife at El Morro National Park. Locally sourced amber jewellery and Dominican cigars are a good buy.
Food & Drink
Local food in the Dominican Republic is a tasty mix of Caribbean, African and Spanish flavours with freshly-caught fish and seafood and ‘rice n peas’ featuring on most menus. Locally grown papaya, mango and passion fruit make for a refreshing dessert. Don't miss a taste of the island’s dark rum and Presidente beer.
In The Evening
The heart of Puerto Plata’s nightlife is the Malecón - the seafront road. Scattered with bars and clubs offering up jazz, salsa and cocktails, this area is the place to head for a lively night out. There’s also the Avenues Hermanas Mirabel and Manolo Tavares where you’ll find a few hip clubs, pumping out Latino sounds for the younger crowd.
