Lying in the heart of the Ionian Islands, just off the west coast of the Greek mainland, is the island of Lefkas. Holidays in Lefkas combine secluded untouched beaches, hidden coves, peaceful rural villages and modern tourist resorts. The island's main tourist resorts are set along the east coast, with its beautiful beaches, pretty offshore islands and excellent sailing conditions.
Daytimes in Lefkas revolve around its beaches and the great selection of water sports on offer. Sailing, kite surfing and windsurfing are popular due to the oftenwindy conditions. Relax over a coffee in Lefkas Towns main square and visit the 13thcentury Santa Mavra fortress. A popular excursion from Nidri is to the spectacular Vafkeri Waterfall or take a boat trip from the harbour to the island of Skorpios.
The nightlife on the island of Lefkas is generally fairly low key. The busiest bars, clubs and restaurants can be found in Lefkas town and the resort of Nidri. Holidays in Lefkas are perhaps better suited for those who prefer quiet evenings enjoying a meal and a drink in a local beachside taverna.
The restaurants on Lefkas serve mainly traditional Greek fare with locally caught fish and seafood featuring on many menus. Start your meal with a mezze of appetisers including taramosalata, tzatziki and dolmades and follow with traditional Greek favourites of mousakka or calamari with baklava or Greek yoghurt with honey for dessert. Be sure to try the islands own Vertzamo wines or some ouzo the strong, aniseedflavoured local liqueur.
