Tobago is the smaller of the two islands that comprise the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Holidays in Tobago offer lush forests, steep hillsides, palm-fringed beaches, turquoise waters and beautiful coral reefs. Tobago is known as 'The Galapagos of the West Indies' due to its abundance of wildlife. The Tobago Forest Reserve, reaching nearly 2,000 feet, is home to many species of mammals, birds, frogs and snakes and tropical vegetation. It's well worth taking a guided tour of the forest, with its waterfalls and spectacular scenery.
The island measures approximately 26 miles in length and six miles in width. Holidays in Tobago boast a beautiful selection of beaches, the most notable being Pigeon Point, Store Bay and Stonehaven Bay, which offer beautiful golden sands and a wealth of water sports. Tobago also features some of the best dive sites in the Caribbean. Keen scuba divers and snorkellers can explore one of the three wrecks, including Maverick Ferry, which is inhabited by an abundance of tropical marine life. Tobago's surrounding waters are home to tropical fish, sharks, rays and turtles.
The north of the island is popular for its glass-bottom boat rides, excursions to the neighbouring islands of Little Tobago, with its spectacular bird sanctuary, and Goat Island, with its untouched coral reefs. Also worth a visit is the traditional fishing village of Charlotteville. Holidays in Tobago also offer further points of interest, including the Tobago Museum, with its range of archaeological treasures, and Fort King George dating back to 1779. Tobago's nightlife is relatively laid-back with beach bars, local singers and dancers.
