Of expected standard. Plumbing showed some small Mediterranean eccentricities. Hotel info should make clear steep climb to street level on a marble staircase which can become slippery.

This hotel is in a good position for exploring Valletta. It is situated downhill and it is quite a climb up steps to the city. It is possible to obtain a taxi. The rooms/bathrooms were clean and well serviced. The buffet breakfast is generous with all tastes catered for. A large outdoor pool area with a drinks service .A small beach area with cordoned area for sea swimming. Staff were friendly and helpful at all times.

The hotel was more of a 5* conference venue than a true 5* holiday hotel, breakfast staff very disorganised, lounge bar staff very slow, also forgot milk with coffee despite being asked for it twice! - no where near good as the Elysium in Cyprus where we stayed in February this year - the Excelsior could learn a lot from them - I guess more of a 4.5* hotel.

Comfortable room with very good housekeeping, fine catering, friendly staff, excellent chauffeur driven tours (especially Charles), good evening time entertaining (especially singer Desi), only drawback is the steep hill to get to Valletta.

Can not fault the hotel and its staff in any way: the only thing to bear in mind - and this is well documented on tripadvisor - is that to get into the city involves quite a steep walk - not a very long one but for older or mobility-challenged guests this could be a little tricky. Having said that there is a twice daily hotel shuttle into the city but only at 10 am and 6pm.
