If you've finally got a few days off and you don't want to waste them, how about going on a city break?
Most of us lead busy lives and crave a long holiday in the summer months, but what to do with that remaining annual leave? Odd jobs and errands can easily take up days off, so getting away on a short holiday break is a great way to make sure you really switch off. With cheap flights to hundreds of cities now readily available, a city break is the perfect way to spend a quick getaway.
Whether it's a romantic weekend escape, a break with a group of friends, a cultural voyage or a shopping trip, city breaks make great little holidays. We've got breaks to cities all over the world; here are five of our favourites...
Amsterdam: Fun-filled Amsterdam is a much-loved city break destination. It's got fantastic museums, great value hotels, plentiful restaurants and, of course, bustling nightlife. Only an hour's flight away from the UK, it's no surprise that Amsterdam is so popular for short break holidays all year round.
Rome: When it comes to culture, you can't go wrong in the Italian capital. From the Trevi Fountain to the Colosseum and the Spanish Steps to the Vatican City, there are so many sights to experience on a city break in Rome. Take a romantic stroll, people-watch over an authentic cappuccino and tuck into delicious pizza and gelato. What more could you want from a short break?
Barcelona: There are plenty of things to see and do in this vibrant city. Walk along the famous Ramblas, discover the Gothic Quarter, or take a tour of the magnificent Nou Camp. And don't miss the colourful architecture of Gaudi at Parc Guelle and the Sagrada Familia. If you like to be beside the seaside, head to the Old Port, or throw down a towel on the sandy beach. Barcelona's nightlife with tapas bars, nightspots and bars is not to be missed and all this is only a two hour flight away from the UK.
Venice: The second Italian city on the list has romance coursing through its iconic canals. Explore must-see sights like the Piazza di San Marco, Campanile and Doges Palace and the Rialto Bridge. Sail to the islands of Murano and Burano and take an evening ride on a gondola. No wonder this one tops so many bucket lists.
New York City: A seven hour flight from the UK brings the Big Apple within easy reach for a city break. Shop 'til you drop in Macy's and Bloomingdales, visit the Statue of Liberty or a ride around Central Park in a carriage. Dine on amazing food, see the latest show on Broadway and then relax with a classic Manhattan cocktail - created in 1930's New York. Few cities impress as much as this.
