Culture, nightlife, art, architecture – when it comes to city breaks, Amsterdam has got it all. The capital of the Netherlands has long been one of Europe’s best-loved city break destinations. Explore this pretty city on foot, by tram, on canal boat or by bicycle. Its cobbled streets, attractive buildings and serene waterways ooze traditional charm, but Amsterdam is also alive with modern shops, nightlife and music venues. Then there’s the art – with work from world class masters like Rembrandt and Van Gogh, as well as cutting edge, present-day pieces. The theatre, museums and opera all add to the cultural delights on offer on Amsterdam holidays. Part cultural and historical gem, part contemporary metropolis, Amsterdam is just the place for a relaxing and fascinating short break.

Just like the UK, the weather in Amsterdam has clear seasons. In summer, average highs reach the early twenties, but occasional humid heatwaves can mean things really hot up. It rains for more than 50% of the year here, so you’re highly likely to encounter a shower or two on holidays in Amsterdam. In winter, daytime temperatures often reach 5°C and rarely drop below zero for extended periods of time (although frost is common.) Spring is a popular time to visit the city, thanks to the abundance of flowers. At this time of year, temperatures can reach the early teens during the day, but do remain cool in the evenings. Autumn is mild and wet, with rain likely most days.
Things to see & do

Amsterdam city breaks are packed with interesting things to see and do. Theres Anne Franks House, the Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandt House, The Rijksmuseum (National Museum,) The Resistance Museum, the colourful flower market, World Heritage Site canals, beautiful parks, Maritime Museum, zoo, superb theatre and music. The only problem youll have is deciding how to pack just so many amazing attractions into one quick trip (which is perhaps why so many people return to Amsterdam time and time again.)
Many people take their holidays in Amsterdam purely because of the nightlife. Famously liberal, Amsterdam nightlife offers everything from vibrant pavement cafes to underground nightclubs, casinos to comedy clubs, highend bars to pulsing live music venues. Late, lively and often outrageous, the nightlife scene here is not to be missed. Head to main squares Rembrandt and Leidseplein for the highest concentration of bars. But all that action doesnt mean you have to have a party holiday in Amsterdam many people come here for the sophisticated, cultural offerings, which include evening canal cruises, the staggering acoustics of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, opera and theatre performances. Whatever your idea of a great night out, youll find it here.

Food & drink

As youd expect from a capital city, Amsterdams melting pot of cultures means there are hundreds of diverse, international restaurants to enjoy here. Whether youre looking for fast food, gourmet cuisine, French and Mediterranean dishes or English high tea, therell be an eatery here to suit you. Dont miss the chance to try the local cuisine, including delicious pancakes and hearty, fish and vegetable based meals.
